I trust Eddie

All the setlist critiquing on this board cracks me up. I mean, of course, everyone is entitled to voice their opinion (the necessary disclaimer) but really, dont you think Eddie Vedder knows what he is doing making the setlist every night? Sure, there has to be the standards, but I would guess that what songs are clicking and which ones are not have an effect on whether they get played, I would trust Eddie to differentiate the two...

    amen! good post.

i wonder if all the complainers about setlists that feature some of the 'hits' ever think that maybe some of the band members may actually enjoy playing those 'hits' and are not just playing them for the 'casual fan' or 'early 90s' fan, etc... but for themselves.

we should just be happy that we've been able to enjoy such an amazing band for so many years and that they put so much energy into making sure that every show is enjoyable and fucking kick ass. lets look at the positives folks. the negatives on this board give me the creeeeeeps. yeeesh, haha!

I was at a Lemonhead concert once, they played for 45 minutes. AIC two weeks ago; played 1.5 hours on the dot. Saw TOOL twice, both same setlist... Saw QOTSA, they stopped playing, almost in the middle of a song after exactly - and I mean exactly - 1 hour and 30 minutes... Jack White of the White Stripes threw his guitar down and walked off the stage angry. System of A Down didn't even have an encore...

We as fans do not know how lucky we are...

    And for us?

First we complain about a 30 second clip
    Than we complain about Target
Than we complain about a very bad snippet of Fixer that was 1 minute or something
Than we complain that we couldn't be in a videoclip
which we complain about 1.5 months later how bad it is
Than we complain about a performance on TV
Than we complain about the artwork
    Than we complain about tickets...
    ...and ticket prices
Than we complain about the tour, dates and places
Than we complain about the seats
Than we complain about other snippets of songs
    Posters
    T-shirts
    Merchandise
Than we complain about the lyrics
Than we complain about concert lengths
    Album lengths
And now we complain about the setlists...

And I know, I know I complain about the complaining...

And this is just a summary of the last two months!

We are all critics and we all have *opinions*; but what the heck did *we* create in the last few weeks. Or years? Are we also this critical about ourselves?

We may be the most spoiled fanbase ever. Ed and the rest of the band can't win...

Well said. It is absolutely ridiculous to complain about the set lists. One of the reasons we all love going to Pearl Jam shows and keep coming back is the variation in the set lists. Eddie has been putting together the set lists for what is it, 18 years now? Other reason we all love Pearl Jam is the diversity and evolution of their music, their longevity, etc. I like hearing Fixer at the same show as Alive. What is the alternative these people are looking for? The same set every night? I'm sure it would be easy enough for them to arrange that if that's what we really want.

And I'm sorry, but I have heard Even Flow live exactly 21 times since 1994, and if I have my way I'll hear it another 21 times and be perfectly stoked for the privilege.

And you know what it is with Even Flow, and what I love, is that Mike really improve (sp?) on this one. It can be three minutes, five minutes, it is never truly the same...

And I don't even like this song... But love the solo...

Besides, it's a nice sigaret break for Ed Vedder...

This thread would be a lot better if post #1 came before post #2. And post #3 was a little long and said the same thing that's always said in other threads, but that's ok because I took a piss while reading it. I'm disappointed that nobody posted Big Wave but I guess that will probably be in a thread posted by someone on the West Coast...
I smile, but who am I kidding...

  • complaining about setlists is a sure sign you go to too many shows. for the most part, who cares what they play? as long as they are on fire, they can play Even Flow on repeat for two hours.

No, I just am making this shit up.... Yes, they are complaining...about having to tolerate the standards, about not enough Yield stuff, or Binaural stuff, or not enough rarities, or they didn't play long enough, or the tag on Daughter wasn't what they were hoping for, or they didn't open with the song they wanted, or they didn't end the show with the song they wanted...the list goes on :!:

Setlist complaining is an olympic sport amongst pearl jam fans, with a rich history and culture surrounding it.

Eddie doesn't know what any of us want to hear.. he plays what he thinks will make a good show for the masses (good show can be interpreted in many ways, not just the 'rockin' kinda way) and what he and the band feels in that city, venue and at that current time. Nothing wrong with this because but if he knew what he was really doing he would play Binaural, Deep, Breath, Alone, Red Mosquito, Tremor Christ, In My Tree, All or None, Get Right, Ghost, Once, Oceans for me ;)

People just think there is some sort of elitist group who whine about setlists, but who here wouldn't mind hearing any of the above songs for once :P
