Very, very, very rarely do i like a song/album when i first hear it...when Binaural & Riot Act came out i hated them both (mostly) and now Binaural is my 2nd fav album and I love most of Riot Act...there will always be a song or 3 that i never really get into..like big wave, come back & parachutes are 3 from the last album i don't like...so it won't suprise me if i don't like a song or 2 from backspacer..but i will give it a chance before i say something i don't mean...i'm still not feeling the Fixer (or super sonic)..but i love got some and speed of sound! but like i said...sometimes it takes awhile to fall in love...at least for me it does.

I've liked some when I first heard them (Avacado) only to dislike them over time, hated some at first that I now love (Vitalogy), and there are those that I love as much now as when I first heard them (Yield, No Code, Binaural)

it really all depends. the poster above said it well, tis similar to my personal experiences, tho not necessarily for the same albums, or even for other artists. some albums to do really love from the get-go, first listen....but most i probably take a lot more time, even with pearl jam.

I get excited about new music. Some songs more than other. I honestly don't listen to their old albums much anymore. I stopped spinning Avocado last year. Besides the Ten Redux, that was the last album I listened to start to finish.

To be honest, I was way more excited to hear new songs and new covers last night over their other stuff.

If I could have a new album every year, listen to it to death and then never hear it again, I would prefer that.

    Good question.

I dont think anyone loves and album when its first out as you dont even know it, sure you can love it after maybe a few plays, but from a first listen i dont know? I guess you can maybe say that sounded good or bad but to truly love it you need a few good listens.

But i did only listen to Dinosaur Jnr's new album 'farm' once and was totally blown away.

    wow......really?
i mean, i love new music as well, but apparently not as much as you. ;)
seriously, i cannot imagine wishing for that, with pearl jam...or any band i adore. not hear the beatles, led zeppelin, hell....even death cab :P.......there are certain artists i adore, certain songs/albums that i so truly LOVe, and never tire of, i cannot imagine giving that up simply for *new*. but hey, that's what makes reading at this site so damned interesting....differing perspectives! :D

It's like a person to person relationship. The initial attraction is there to many of the songs, but I have to take time and let the songs sink in before I "love" an album.

Doesn't mean I don't screw it on the first date though....uh oh

Usually there will be one or two songs on the album that really jump out to me. It takes me a lot of listens to really get an entire album, PJ or otherwise.

I kind of like it that way.

After 9/20, I'll probably be discovering a new gem -- or a gem within a gem -- every week.

If you squint your eyes just right, the Avocado on the cover of Self-Titled does kind of look like a vagina.

I think it's hard to listen to an album objectively the first time through. I always seem to have a preconceived notion of what it SHOULD sound like (based on a single, etc) and tend to judge the album based on that. Once I give it a few listens and can get past my initial expetations, I think it's easier to get into it and appreciate it for what it really is.

Ten, Vs, Yield are albums I immediately loved and continued to do so. That's rare and basically the best thing that can happen.

No Code, I remember was actually the second or third PJ album I got and I thought it was alright - immediately liked Hail, Hail, Red Mosquito, Off He Goes (and Mankind actually, I honestly thought at the time (hey, I was young) that 'Eddie Vedder sounds weird on this track'). Over time it's grown on me to be up there with Ten, Vs, Yield.

Same for Vitalogy, and Binaural. Binaural probably had the biggest shift in opinion for me though. Hard to get into at first - even the more rocking tracks like Insignificance and Grievance - but now... well, it's amazing isn't it.

    +1 on both of these!

While I did not do it...anyone who read that and actually did it, man up and admit it.

rarely when i first listen to an album do it instantly like it...i need time to let it process and digest it...and the final arbiter is seeing the songs live...that's usually when i know if it's something i really like or love

backspacer has promise from what i've heard...the 20th can't come soon enough :D
