Neil Young - where to start?

I have some of his more mellow albums such as Harvest Moon, but I want to try out the more rocking stuff. He has such a big catalogue of music, I don't know where to start.

So, I'm opening it up to the floor. It doesn't matter how old the album is, what era it's from etc....what's the best rocking stuff from Young?
2006: London Astoria, Lisbon I & II, Paris, Verona, Milano
2007: Wembley, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen, Nijmegen
2009: Manchester
2010: Belfast, Berlin
2012: Manchester I & II
2014: Leeds, Milton Keynes
2018: Amsterdam I, Prague, Krakow, Berlin, Barcelona, London
2022: Berlin, Budapest, Krakow, Amsterdam II

  • I would start with Everybody Knows This is Nowhere...as a perfect transitioning piece. You'll get Down By The River, Cinnamon Girl, Cowgirl in the Sand, etc. with the original Crazy Horse.

Then move into Rust Never Sleeps...and live on that for a while.

Then, I would jump right into Weld...double disc, live...and there will be no turning back.

Just got Mirrorball last week. How I went this long without hearing that, I don't know... "I'm the Ocean" is my new favorite song. get it! How can you get wrong with Neil Young playing with Pearl jam! :D

Obviously all of Neil's old stuff is great but as far as new stuff, one of my favs is Sleeps With Angels, and I had the opportunity to hear a couple tunes from Live at Massey Hall 1971, but that's probably more mellow, I love his version of Ohio on there, very deep.

I'm the Ocean - is sooo awesome ... as is Peace and Love ...but I'm the Ocean is how I like to start a day when I need some serious productivity ..it just moves so well. I love Mirrorball!

Get Rust Never Sleeps & Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.

The move into .... Tonight's The Night / After The Gold Rush / On The Beach / Harvest / Weld

His greatest hits or compilation 'Decade' are also good places to start if you want a retrospective of his career.

    Harvest
    After The Goldrush
    Tonights The Night
    Mirrorball

I think that will be a great start.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is a good one too...but I started with Harvest and After The Goldrush and I was hooked from day one...

    Hope that helps you.

I think Live Rust is a great starting point. Even though it has some mellow stuff it gives you a great glimpse at some of his more rockin styles.

Everybody knows this is nowhere gives you cinnamon girl, cowgirl, and down by the river three big time neil rockers.

Then the mention of Ragged Glory. his 80's rock fest album.

weld as mention also is another nice live mix similar to live rust.

of course mirror ball rocks with pj as the backing band.

Those 5 are good ones to get you going.

A few of his later albums are good:

Trans is cool but the music is closer to ELO than Neil Young.
Old Ways is some exceptional country music. Play this one when you're driving thru the country.
Ragged Glory & Weld are must haves. Neil blew his eardrums out making those records.
Harvest Moon is very nice and the most popular of his later albums.
Mirrorball is the one "Pearl Jam" album that everyone overlooks. Jack Irons kicks ass!
Year Of The Horse is awesome, and probably the last one that really grabbed me good.
My dad is a big fan of Greendale.

Yup...Decade is like a buffet of his career up to that point.

Start with the greatest hits (the one that has around 12 tracks on...not his decade stuff). There's waaaayyy too much Young albums to sift through for a beginner.

You'll convert yourself from the boss to the godfather of grunge
2006 ░▒▓ Astoria, Dublin, Leeds, Reading, Lisbon, Paris, Verona, Athens
2007 ░▒▓ London, Dusseldorf, Copenhagen, Nijmegen
    2009 ░▒▓ Manchester, London
    2010 ░▒▓ Hyde Park

*§* Music is all the juice i'll need *§*
  • I'd say the Ditch Trilogy: On The Beach, Tonight's the Night, and Time Fades Away (this one is only available on vinyl and i'm not even sure it's still in print--i heard it once from a friend who'd taped it off vinyl). The first two are two of my favorite records - by anyone. He rocks on some of the tunes, but not as much as the other albums people are mentioning (Rust Never Sleeps, Ragged Glory, etc.), but I think these are his best albums - incredibly emotional songs, loaded with biting lyrics, full of doom and heartache.

You can find times fade away on cd and on file sharing networks.

I found a cd copy (bootlegged obviously) in a record store about 6 years ago in Chapel Hill NC. I was very happy that day :D
