Don't even think about reachin' me
I won't be home
Don't even think about stoppin' by
Don't think of me at all
I did, what I had to do
If there was a reason, it was you...

Don't even think about gettin' inside
Voices in my head, voices
I got scratches, all over my arms
One for each day, since I fell apart
I did, what I had to do
If there was a reason, it was you...

Footsteps in the hall, it was you, you
Pictures on my chest, it was you
It was you...

I did, what I had to do
And if there was a reason
Oh, there wasn't no reason, no
And if, there's something you'd like to do
Just let me continue, to blame you

Footsteps in the hall, it was you, you
Pictures on my chest, it was you, you

i read on Wiki (yeah i know... ),that this song was written from the perspective of a death row prisoner.but to me this song summed up exactly how i felt about my marrige break up and the shift in friends, family and my own mind set afterwards.

i had a pretty big mental breakdown about 2 weeks before my wedding day,and found out i was pregnant 2 days after the ceromony.my ex and our whole group of friends where heavily into drugs and i made the desicion three weeks in that i couldnt be with him for the sake of myself and my children.it was amazing the way people felt sorry for him and shunned me.i still stand by my choice.even 4 years down the line i wouldnt do anything diffrent, but this song reminds me of that time.when i found myself backed into a corner with little to no support from the people i thought i could trust.

the lines that have particular meaning are

"Don't even think about stoppin' by
Don't think of me at all
I did, what I had to do
If there was a reason, it was you"

"I got scratches all over my arms,
One for each day, since i fell apart"

"And if, there's something you'd like to do
Just let me continue, to blame you"

Seek,
Find be yourself.
Don't follow the herd.
Don't repeat in spite of the encores.
Be yourself.
Otherwise you'll bore us.

Nice post, thanks for the lyrics, I never really looked at them, but the death row perspective makes sense. The song definitely evokes emotion of being alone and I suppose that's how I related to it but nothing really that dramatic for me. I think some hot chick dumped me and at the time I was very superficial and was upset. I like to think I've grown up sense then and am away from all that teen angst but probably not. When will I grow up or teen angst go away?

I have always thought of Footsteps as the final song of a four song set relating to physically or verbally abusive relationships. First is Betterman, "she needs him, that is why she'll be back again." Next is Nothingman for the point when you know there is truly nothing left. Then you leave and there is the anger and violence of Rearviewmirror. Finally for reflecting on it and explaining it there is Footsteps. I know these weren't written with this intention but listended to this way, certainly if you have experienced this kind of relationship, is very powerful.
