Seriously... is there a more depressing, yet beautiful song? I don't think so. I was watching Big Fish last night, and I didn't know when or where the song comes in, but it's so beautifully placed :| and at that exact moment it makes for an emotional moment. I didn't expect the movie to be so sad.

But the thing with Man of the Hour... it's hauntingly dark, and terribly sad... yet there are those glimpses of happiness... the song toys with your emotions. (well mine) and if you have lost someone in your life im sure when you listen it REALLY hits you. I know it does something to me... makes me feel two different emotions.

What a beautiful song.

Personally, I think the songs that Ed writes about death/dying/dealing with death - are some of the most beutiful and sad songs I have ever heard.

agreed. i still get goosebumps from Long Road, especially the version from the 9/11 benefit when Neil plays the organ.

Man of the Hour ends with a note of hopefulness though, doesn't it?

"I feel that this is just goodbye for now."

Meaning ... we'll meet again, in the afterlife or whatever comes next.

I agree, this song and the movie (especially together) are beautiful pieces of art, I really dig it and it's a real live gem...so moving!

  • Completely agree. It really is an emotional rollercoaster of a song, and that's why I love it so much. Because that's how life is, ups and downs all rolled into one. And as someone else said, it ends on an optimistic, if still depressing note: "I feel that this is just goodbye for now."

    Love it.

Not as much a fan of the movie, though I still like it.

  • I remember seeing the movie in the theatre and at the time my dad was very sick and it just hit me like a hammer at the end of the movie and I just started crying and couldn't stop.

He has since passed away and I always think of him when I hear that song.

This is and will probably always remain the only song that moved me to tears.
  • Devastating song. It makes "Come Back" look like the turd that it is.

It is a beautifully written song. Another reason why Ed is my favorite song writer.

It's such a fantastic song in its own right, but a perfect match with the movie too. I remember going to see it with no idea PJ had done a song for it, it was great.

I was supposed to see the movie with some friends but didn't arrive in time, so I watched a later showing by myself. I was so glad I did, because I totally lost it at the end. I didn't know anyone there, so I just let it flow. Having lost my father a few years before and my mother that year made me a emotional mess. Thought it was a beautiful movie and song, none the less. Still makes me cry too.
