Baroness- Blue Record 10/13/09

I read the first review i've seen for the new Baroness album recently and HOLY MOTHERFUCK! If this album is half as good as this review makes it we are all in for a real treat! \m/

I’ll be the first to admit that the debut album from Baroness didn’t do much for me so when I received their newest effort “Blue Record” it was met with a certain amount of apathy. Unlike most critics I enjoy when my expectations are blown from the water, which is exactly what happened with this epic, layered and highly intelligent album. There’s only a few bands out there making heavy music for adults and Baroness is clearly one of them.
When I say heavy music for adults I mean music that has real weight to it without the trappings of the “metal genre” or all the bells and whistles that go with it. Blue Record is a more of a sonic landscape than an album, with a thick guitar driven sound that builds bridges of pure groove across vast and dark space chasms. I know I’ll probably get kicked in the teeth for this but Blue Record is the album that Mastodon wished they had written. Baroness attacks their songs with a complete lack or pretension allowing them to unfold completely unforced. Nobody here is out to prove how well they can play just that they can create great songs.
I was also impressed with the raw emotion the songs seem to have without being too specific about it. This is record you can put your own feelings into and draw out of it what you need. It’s a record to get high to, head bang to, try and learn guitar to or just sit in your room alone in the dark contemplating if you want to get up the next day. Baroness play with more mellow and insightful musical ideas as with the opening instrumental track “Bullshead Psalm” or the Bowie-by-way-of-Zeppelin tune “Steel The Sleeps The Eye”.
Don’t worry though; those of you who love the huge riffs and grooves won’t be disappointed. Just because Baroness has expanded their musical repertoire doesn’t mean they’ve abandoned what got them here. The riffage on “Oer Hell And Hide” and “A Horse Called Golgotha” is worth the price of admission alone.
Imagine Monster Magnet if they were still writing good records tinged with older Rush and then lightly smattered with Kyuss and Black Sabbath. I know I sound like too much going on but somehow Baroness pulls it together and make it sound beautiful. That’s another thing about Blue Record, with all the hugeness going on it’s still a beautiful album.
Blue Record is much more like a musical journey than a collection of songs. Baroness use piques and valleys, power chords and acoustic melodies in an attempt to tell a story that begins in their minds but quickly gets communicated to ours. This is one of those few records where you have no idea what the band is saying but you know exactly what they mean.
Crushing grooves, strong melodies, layered textures that create almost an ethereal vibe to the album make Blue Record a cut above what other bands like Baroness are doing right now. Need to battle underwater sea demons? Plan on stealing an alien spaceship and driving it across the sun-baked desert until it crashes to the Earth? Heading out on a drug-fueled sled in order to kiss the eye of the Sun? If so then Blue Record is the just the soundtrack you need.

I've been listening to First & Second a lot lately and their sound has changed a lot. I'm still very excited to hear the new album though.

I've listened to a good bit of it and i'm digging what i'm hearing. A little early for me to make any real judgements, but i can tell i'm gonna like it now it is just a matter of how much i will like it.
The live disc was a little disapointing in the song selction was all from the red album, but that is not too big of a deal.
