That is what Ed called them on the ITTW tour.

You know, its the guy right infront of you with their hand held camera filming the show and blocking your view - AFTER the promoter, venue and artist specifically asked for no cameras - yeah that guy.

What do you think of these people?

The you tuber has allowed me to hear supersonic, the end and a few other live gems - as of today I am loving the you tuber's work. In a month when their camera is back in my face I doubt ill be that happy.

Your thoughts?

Any minimal excitement I may have watching a poorly recorded video of Pearl Jam on youtube is FAR outweighed by the frustration and annoyance I feel when at a show when some jackass is interfering with my experience so he can get a "better shot".

There was a time Ed was behind bootleggers.

    People change.

Thou it’s a big difference now. It’s not a recorder in your pocket, it’s a camera out for all to see.

Obnoxious. ...when you're in the crowd with them.

Makes Kat/Sea’s job harder too. All that deleting posts of vids posts. Thou some pass thou. I’d like to know why some get deleted off here and some don’t.

If you are going to be filming stuff or taking pics thats fine by me. But pick your spots and be done. If you are doing it the whole show they had better becoming out like this.

watch this video in HD. (it's phish but the quality is AMAZING)

If you are standing behind someone taller than you at a show, are they deliberately trying to spoil your view just by being tall? No they're not and you can move if you want to. In the old days, when people used to hold up lighters at shows during the slower songs, again it wasn't done with any malice. If someone is holding up a camera to record their own personal memento, they aren't doing it to annoy you personally and you can also move.

For me, making a video or taking photos of some songs is all about preserving some memories of the show for your own enjoyment. If you decide to put them onto Youtube for others to enjoy then I fail to see how that can be a bad thing. All you are doing is helping those who were there share some memories and those who weren't there see what they missed out on. Yes I am a "Youtuber" as Ed called it, but if there is a strict 'no camera' policy then most people respect that. If there is no such policy then it's fair enough if people want to take photos or videos. Over 20,000 people have watched my video of The End and not one has called me a "jackass". On the contrary, most people are thankful.

Personally, I found the douche at the SheBu show that kept calling me and a few others 'f*cking c**ts' for taking photos to be a far more offensive "jackass" than those of us capturing a memory.

Nice response- I would expect nothing less from a youtuber....do you really need to record it to have it be sacred? Man, what ever happened to good old MEMORY! And no, many people do not follow the no camera policy- otherwise this thread probably wouldn't exist. Oh, and your "most people are thankful" remark, if you really think that they personally care that you recorded it you are naive. They just want to see the video and I dont think they care how it was made or who made it....

At no point did I say that people care that I was the one that recorded it. Like I said, it's for my personal memories and if other people get something out of it then that's fine by me. I merely pointed out that a lot of people have watched videos without complaining. I couldn't give a damn who records the songs. If I'm interested in hearing one I'll search for it, it's not about being praised for making the recording.

You know, for me its about interfering with the creation of the art of music...wow, that sounds pious :D But seriously, PJ has been great about putting out bootlegs, DVDS and other media to help people remember and reconnect to their concert experience. Why cant this be enough for everybody? When I go to a show, I love the experience of knowing that I am actually personally, in the flesh, witnessing the creation of art. And I pay handsomely for this privilege. Knowing that there are a bunch of people in the audience who get off on freely and indiscriminately giving this experience, or some version of it, to anyone who has an internet connection, to me is taking away some of the spirit of the show itself. The Hopi tribe and many other Native tribes for many years refused to let people take their picture, for they felt it stole part of their souls. I guess youtubers remind me of this and it irks me....

well that's sad. he himself asked them to stop but they didn't. that's beyond rude.

i'm all for taking a couple pics. but it's just not very rock n roll to me to have a camera/vid in my hand the WHOLE show. it's lame. put it down and jam the hell out!

Sucks when your memory of a concert is a memory of taking pictures.. why can't people just live the moment instead of trying to capture it? It will never be the same again.

I refuse to put a camera in front of my eyes to take a picture at a Pearl Jam concert, let alone piss or blink..

I love looking at 10c's own photographers at work. That's why they are there, right?

We don't bring camera or video camera to the shows... gets in our way of enjoying the show.

But yeah people who sit there filming videos all shows only really irritates me if they are in the front row.

You go to a show to watch photographers take pictures of the band?

It all comes down to personal preference again doesn't it? Personally I like taking photos and videos at gigs because it means I can look back at a later date and relive a part of the show. If other people want to see them then you know where to find them. I've only been doing it for the past 2 or 3 years which means that there is around 15 years worth of gigs that I've been to that I haven't got a boot or a video of. I would have liked to have been able to do this in the past but unfortunately (for me) I couldn't so that's why I like documenting the shows I go to now.

but reliving it is never the same as being there.. to each their own, but I barely have time to blink when I see a show.. the best memory is not a digital capture, but right in my noggin'.

Cameras never come even close to capturing the experience.
  • I don't see what the big deal is if someone grabs a few pictures during them show as memorabilia, I find it 100 less annoying than the idiots who decide to yell out what song the band or Eddie should play all night even after he asks for quiet. Ill take a million you tubers over 1 idiot yelling out @ a Vedder show any day of the week. If your gonna take pics & vids just do it in clips and everyone will be happy. And 1 thing I do consider is the person behind me, most of the times my fiance will take any pictures or video because she is 5 feet tall and gets in nobodies way. Go to youtube and check out my Bonnaroo vids from this year you can run a search on connington72 we were like 3rd row pit for Bruce on Clarence side and he kept coming right out in front of us during every song...Im so glad we all took turns with vid and pics because nobody would have beleived it and 10 years from now i have a video of me jumping in front of Bruce and its great. To each is own, opinions are like a-holes,we all know the cliches.....my advice, be kind to your neighbor and dont get in there way if your gonna film.

I am kind of irritated by this... If I read your comments correctly, you're saying your personal memories trump the personal memories of the people behind you that have to deal with your camera in their face?

If you've got people calling you out at a show because you're blocking thier view and you're not stopping that must be what you're thinking - - the classic - screw you, Ill get mine

I also think cameras get in the way. I like to take pics with friends before the show but very very seldom take them during. All you have to do is google to find every band member from every angle.

No, you haven't read me correctly at all and I apologise if you're irritated by my comments. All I have said is that I enjoy taking photos and videos as a little memento of the gig and if other people enjoy watching them then that's fine by me. It's got nothing to do with trumping anybody else's memories or spoiling their views and I certainly don't have a 'screw you' attitude (obviously we don't know each other but that's honestly the polar opposite of my personality).

As a short-arse, I often don't get a great view and I certainly don't intentionally block people with my camera. I'll take a shot every now and then, or a video every now and then, certainly not every song and if I'm blocking someone then obviously I'll stop. Sharing videos is about letting other people enjoy the show too, it's not a pissing contest over who got the best video or who gets it online first and I certainly don't expect love and affection just for putting a video up. Like I said, if other people dig it that's cool.

The guy that was calling us out at the SheBu show was the first time I had ever felt threatened by someone at a show and that's certainly not what going to a show should be about. I had taken about 5 or 6 photos and one short video before he started shouting and swearing at us. I moved from Stone's side to nearere Eddie, where I actually got a better view, and left him to abuse others.
