I know Eddie has definitely said some funnier things, but I was listening to the 03-29-94 show from Florida, and Eddie says, "We're gonna play a new song, if you don't like it, you know, sorry you can buy the new David Lee Roth record, we don't give a fuck"! I've been laughing about this all morning!! One never knows what's gonna come out of Eddie's mouth!!! Keep it comin'!

I find everything about David Lee Roth to be hilarious...including his music.

Do you ever really listen to DLR's lyrics?

    Now, that's funny.

    Or pathetic.

    Both.

Sorry I can't agree with you on this one!! In my opinion, David Lee Roth is an assclown!!!

I agree that Roth is an assclown but that was more or less his persona.

Van Halen definately rocked the 80s. Saw them 4 times with Roth and every show was great.

David Lee Roth is an entertainer and he prides himself on being an entertainer.

His whole image is that of a good time, party bad boy surfer.

He never, ever claimed to be anything other than that.

Never claimed to be a great musician.

Never claimed to be a profound lyricist.

Never claimed to be the voice of a generation.

In Van Halen's early years (mostly the first three or four albums), Van Halen was great. Their music rocked and DLR was one hell of a showman. I saw them at the Palladium in NYC on the VH II tour ( Blackfoot as the opening band) and they rocked. Great show. Blackfoot kicked mighty ass!!!

But Van Halen's music got more and more watered down and less interesting after the third or fourth album. As well, DLR became more and more of the ass clown; you all know now.

His lyrics are laughable. Always were. When he had Stevie Vai in his band, they rocked! That was one hell of a band. DLR was of course ....the same entertainer/assclown.

Let's not pretend DLR should have been something else or that he thought of himself as something else. The guy is and always was all Hollywood/Vaudeville.

One of my favorites. Eddie is in rare form throughout that whole show.

"Look at all the f***ing tans. That could make a nice couch out of you guys."

and of course the "Real Jeff Ament" speech.
Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"

It's all about the way he says it. The quote itself does it no justice.

Saw Dave on his first solo tour also, had Billy Sheehan(?) on bass. Super band that time but they tried to make the VH tunes their own and weren't very good.

Dave did disappoint me telling the same jokes tour after tour.

Here's an example that did have me laughing my ass off though:

Quoted from memory so not exact, "Hey hold on, somebody just threw something, I think it was a quarter. Man that could put my eye out with all these lights shining down. Hey but that's alright, I saw the guy that threw it and after the show, I gonna fuck your girlfriend."

At the time we all knew Dave probably could, but he did use it on his solo tour again.

I would agree that DLR is the greatest front-man of the 80's. He knows how to get a crowd going and knows what they want to hear/see. But the all time honors has to go to the great Jim Morrison (followed by Eddie Vedder in a close second!).

Who was better in those bad hair-band years... Brett Michaels, Vince Neil, Rob Halford? Not much competition for Roth. I'd Say Axl Rose has a shot, but he was too hit and miss in concert. Actually, I believe DLR was probably a big influence for a lot of the hair metal front men.
