Taking Pictures without a flash at a concert...

I know someone talked about this at one point, but couldn't find the answer I am looking for.

Can anyone provide the proper settings for a point and shoot camera when taking pictures at a concert without using a flash?

This would be helpful to me or anyone who plans on taking a few pics while at one of the shows.

Thanks!!!

Not sure what kind of camera you're talking about, but for my digital camera, it's the ISO setting.

all you need to do is turn off the flash on a point & shoot...at least that's what works for my camera :)

I have a Canon sd850. I'm just not sure if there are multiple settings to get the pictures to come out the best. I don't use it for concerts like I should because I don't know how to adjust it for the lighting.

Depends on how far you're from the light source (stage), the iso setting is fine but it need some stillness but that's very hard at a concert, I took a couple of pictures using ISO, then with flash and then without flash, I compare results and normally no iSO without flash works fine, but well take a look into the specs of your camera and the users manual.

Good luck and post those pictures!

    Awesome, thanks norm :D

I will have to try it on Monday in Chicago.

I would just hate to annoy a performer with a flash. I know it would piss me off.

I will post them if they come out decent. Also, I am not friends with owners manuals  Ok, well as a very last resort, maybe I'll look at one 8-)
  • I always try shooting (Canon Rebel SLR) without, a flash ruins the photo.

indeed. most point and shoots do accommodate their settings automatically for the low light. then it's just hold steady, wait for a lot of stage light....and shoot!

Aren't flashes useless if you're more than 20 feet away anyways?

  • my nikon has a "hi iso" setting, which raises the iso to a max of 1600 (depending on the lighting conditions).

my nikon has a "hi iso" setting, which raises the iso to a max of 1600 (depending on the lighting conditions).
But that gives grainy pictures at that high of an ISO.

if its just a point and shoot- turn off the flash- and just take the photo- the camera will do the rest.

i understand that...it only goes that high if it has too. if the stage is well lit it won't get anywhere close to that, but under certain circumstances and light, i like the grainy, film-like look.

Yes, all a flash would do is light up the back of the heads in front of you and have zero affect on the stage.
