Ryan Adams, Connor Oberst, Jack White, Eddie Vedder
And if there was one in Canada:
Leslie Feist, Kevin Drew, Win Butler, Emily Haines
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
I can follow your logic with Eddie Vedder, though I disagree, but how exactly did Trey Anastasio "really shape music from 1995 onward"? :?
Basically started the whole "jam" movement (they exploded in 1995). Phish was arguably the biggest touring act from 1997-2000. Without them, chances are Bonnaroo and Rothbury wouldn't exist (two of the more influential festivals) and neither would Dave Matthews Band, String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's McGee, Disco Biscuits, etc.
Quite an interesting question. When I consider it properly, there are not many people in the music industry who have had a major effect on me, or influenced me. Not that I'm cold to anything like that, it's just that with me it takes something special.
Eddie Vedder has had a major impact, through his lyrics.
Thom Yorke through the beauty of his voice and his determination to music the boundaries of music.
Other than that, it's more admiration rather than being influenced by them. Pete Townshend made me want to play guitar after watching "Live At The Isle of Wight" and Jack White made me want to give up and cry when I saw him play live in Blackpool!
I don't know if I can comfortably create such a list, but I'm a bit amazed that Jim James hasn't made anyone's list yet.
So here it goes...
Jim James
Eddie Vedder
and that's it. no one else measures up to those two in my mind. i tried to find two more, but it didn't happen. and now it makes sense why there are only two bands' message boards I post on (PJ and MMJ).
Jack White, Thom Yorke, Trent Reznor, Beck and Eddie (I couldn't stop at 4).
