I must be on crack or something because I don't think I know any of these. I know more of the hits from REM but would any of these be deemed "commercial" hits?

I dont care about REM, but I would love for a band to release a set like this, full of rarities done live.

When it comes out I can burn a copy of it (from the one I bought of course) and add the live version of Country Feedback from their Greatest Hits CD to make the greatest R.E.M. concert ever.

Sounds like a winner to me.
    It's all about the music...

On October 26th, R.E.M. will release R.E.M. LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA, a two-CD set featuring 39 songs from the band's acclaimed 2007 working rehearsals in Dublin, Ireland.

"Live At The Olympia" ventures back to the first week in July 2007, when R.E.M. set up camp at the venerable Olympia Theatre in Ireland's capital city and tested new material over five nights before fired-up, capacity crowds comprised of fan club members, friends, family, and fans from all over the world who were party to R.E.M.'s so-called "experiment in terror." "We were just trying to do something we hadn't done before," said guitarist Peter Buck, "which meant there was no relaxing during the set. Every second we were playing something we didn't know all that well. Which was kind of good... there were all kinds of terror elements going on during that show."

The music on "Live At The Olympia" was produced by Dublin native Jacknife Lee who, along with R.E.M., co-produced the band's 14th studio album, ACCELERATE, which subsequently shot straight to number one in nine countries. Many of the eleven songs on ACCELERATE appeared in some form or fashion at the Dublin rehearsals, and R.E.M. LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA is an opportunity for fans to hear and experience those songs at one of the earliest stages in the developmental process.

In addition to the new material, the band also served up twenty-nine other songs, many of them rarely if ever played, culled mainly from the band's storied IRS years, ranging from the 1982 e.p. Chronic Town to 1983's Murmur up through 1988's Document.

A special edition 2 CD & DVD set will contain a film of the Dublin shows by Vincent Moon and Jeremiah, who previously worked with R.E.M. on Ninetynights, Six Days, and the video for Supernatural Superserious. For more on the forthcoming release, fans should be sure to visit remdublin.com where audio for "Driver 8" is currently streaming.

    sweet!!

no there isn't a hit in this set whatsoever... a lot of accelerate songs (as it's the accelerate rehearsals) plus so many rare R.E.M. tracks from 80, 90s and 00's. This is a big R.E.M. fans dream live CD release believe me.

drive and electrolite are the only songs I think most people will even recognize apart from that it's even more rarified than PJ's Benoroya Hall was :)

I think people might recognize Driver 8 and Pretty Persuasion if they heard them. But sounds like this is going to be incredible. :D

  • Soaking this all in now... so good.

Wanted the vinyl but $100 was a bit steep. Also not a fan of the visual style of the DVD, but that's not such a big deal.

    Great job guys!

Yeah the DVD actually kinda sucks. I can't believe they agreed to that type of style and presentation.

Thankfully the music more than makes up for it!

You're not gonna believe this, but I went to my friendly, cool, local record store yesterday - and they DIDN'T HAVE IT. The owner wasn't there, and the random lady working said it's a live album, and most people don't buy those, so they didn't order any. :o
If I recover early enough from tonight's show, I plan on hitting up Princeton Record Exchange tomorrow. Of course, I'm just now functional after Spectrum 1. ;)

got mine yesterday...thanks amazon...haven't had a chance to listen to/watch it yet :D

    But see, that's the point!

If you want hits, check out the "R.E.M. Live" release from a few years ago.

The purpose of this release was to showcase the new album and songs they never play, so it's a virtual goldmine of rarities.

what's the dvd like? i had the same disappointment with the hold steady's live release... the dvd wasn't as interesting as i'd really hoped and the actual cd was underwhelming given how good they are live. i'd hate for this to be the same way.

i heard their last live release (the official rem live, not the live shows tacked onto the deluxe remasters) had a dvd that was utterly impossible to watch.
  • I am unable to access YouTube from work, but I know that there are clips of Drive and Man-Sized Wreath on there so just look them up with the keyword Olympia thrown in and you'll get an idea. I remember watching them a few weeks back and thinking "Wow, I hope the whole thing isn't like this" but sadly it is.

But hey, you can save a few bucks and just get the 2CD version!

i may end up doing that... maybe i should also go back and get the rem live set. i like both sides of rem... the stellar arena band and the cool indie band. their show on the accelerate tour was one of the best concerts i've ever seen.
