Wrong number averts house fire (PJ SAVES THE DAY)
Hamilton couple Sue and Barry Whitelaw had an electric heater catch fire while they were asleep.
They realised just in time, but it wasn't the fire alarm that alerted them - it was a former fireman named Wayne Kennedy who accidentally rang the wrong number and woke them up.
It all began just before 7am on Monday morning in Tauranga. Mr Kennedy was trying to win Pearl Jam tickets in a radio competition, but accidently called the Whitelaws in Hamilton.
After waking up, the Whitelaws discovered that the heater was on fire and quickly threw it outside onto their lawn.
Mr Whitelaw bought the Evantair heater from The Warehouse two years ago for $70. The Warehouse says it was in stock from 2005 to 2007 and they no longer sell this particular model.
The Whitelaws thought their heater would be okay to leave on overnight because they had set the thermostat to low, however The Warehouse warns against it.
"We need to make sure that all customers and all consumers are aware that you shouldn't leave heaters unattended," says Stuart Yorston from The Warehouse. "You shouldn't leave them on overnight unless they have specific instructions saying that you're able to do that."

Bruce Mayer of Chicago, Il was preparing to throw eight newborn kittens into the Chicago River off of the Randolph Street Bridge last Monday afternoon. According to witnesses Mayer had tied the burlap sack's top with rope and began to swing the sack full of kittens to throw them into the river. Mr Mayer was caught off guard when his cell phone rang. He put down the kittens on the bridge and answered. Mr Eddie Vedder (musician) asked Mayer if "Neil Young was available to talk". According to Vedder, Mayer said "I'm not Neil Young... I was just about to throw these kittens off of the Randolph Street Bridge". Vedder then suggested Mayer simply jump off the bridge himself and spare the kitten's lives. Mayer, being a Pearl Jam fan, heeded the advice of Vedder, and left the kittens midway on the bridge as he himself jumped off to his death. Vedder adopted two of the kittens, naming one of them "Dog" and the other "Hey You" after the Pink Floyd song.
