Lack of Backspacer Live

It looks like most shows they are only playing the 2 songs (Fixer and Got Some). Why are they afraid to play more of the new stuff before the album comes out? I would think they would like to try something new and get some more excitement going for the new album. Does anyone think we'll get more than these 2 once they hit North America this week?

I love the old stuff, but it would be nice to hear some more new stuff.

I personally dont want them to. Maybe The End or Unthought Known but only if they are Ed solo versions.

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with recordings. There are already audience recordings out there for Shepherd's Bush and the Germany show. The band probably doesn't want half the album leaked before it comes out.

They'd rather everyone listen to 10-30 second snipets from Verizon or Amazon?

I think that's exactly the reason. I think one of the guy mentioned something like that in an interview.

Playing the first two singles at every show is a good way to support a upcoming album

I think this mini-tour is intended to hype the release. They are playing the single and teasing us with the probable next single (Got Some). They seem to be avoiding giving the milk away for free (or $172, depending on how you look at it)

Backspacer will be in stores Sept. 20th. The N.A. tour to "support the release of Backspacer" begins Sept. 21st in Seattle.

These Euro and N.A. shows that are before that tour are different, imo. Personally, I love that they aren't overloading these sets with the new songs.

That's old-school-record-company thinking. I say play it. Nothing generates buzz like hearing new stuff live. They should play Backspacer front-to-back at one of the Youze-a-palooza shows. That would be SO cool.
I smile, but who am I kidding...
  • 2006 tour I was so sick of hearing most of the new album at every show. So far I'm loving the setlists on this current tour.

I'm not whining. Just eager to hear some and wondering why they wouldn't play more.

The dont play other songs than "Got Some" and "The Fixer" on the shows thats are recorded for BOOTS, because the BOOTS are released before the TURTLE album.

reminds me a bit of the 2005 canada tour. we were hoping for previews from the upcoming avacado but didn't really get many if any. though they kept the sets fresh with stuff off lost dogs and new covers. and looks similar this time...brother, the newish who covers, and that sorta thing. but good sets overall, good length, good vareity from show to show. all good. this will serve to get us amped up and hopefully most will get to see them in sept/oct as well. though i'd love to hear supersonic. the snippet on amazon makes me crazy to hear the whole thing. lol.

Remember the tour before Avocado? Months before the album and all of the tour-preview articles were saying we'd be hearing new stuff premiered. They really played nothing from Avocado except Gone as it was an ad-hoc song written in Philly(I think) the night before. That was unplanned and slipped into the new album in the 11th hour. Mid way through the tour, Ed said in an interview that he prefers that people hear new material on the album first, not live first. So this, what they're doing now, doesn't surprise me a bit. Those 2 songs are out of the bag already and that's why they're playing them. I would bet that at the time of Conan, there was still a debate as to which would be the 1st single. I bet at that time Got Some had the edge over Fixer and that is why I think they played it. I would also speculate that if the Fixer was decided upon at that point, they would have played it on Conan, and it would have been the only song played live up until the new album's release.

I think it's a load of crap that they're not playin more new tunes, or if they don't plan on adding more as they go along. This IS the Backspacer tour. Bands play shows before albums come out and play the tunes from them. If they are holdin out b/c they think it's gonna eat into their sales, they're fuckin delusional.

I could be wrong, but I didnt see 10c refer to any of the shows taking place before Seattle as being part of the "Backspacer Tour." The Europe/Canada/Chicago were just billed as PJ shows and didn't mention supporting any album right?

I dunno if that's wrong, but I think it was fair to assume that the shows would coincide with the album, and they do.

Was there a mention that they were warmup shows?
  • I think you guys are arguing the wrong things. If it's the backspacer tour or not. Who cares.

The point is this: Pearl Jam sells records regardless of leaks. In fact, they continue to do well because of loyal ass fans that actually buy -- meaning pay cash -- for their albums, vinyl, socks...it doesn't matter.

That to me means they should play a few more if they want to. It's obvious they are not on purpose though for all the reasons you guys mention. I just think that's flawed thinking. If they came out with 5 collectors editions of the new record, fans would buy all 5. after they've downloaded all the audience recordings. They'd then buy the official bootlegs despite having the audience recordings already. and so on and so on.

Right on........Kinda makes them seem like outta touch fogeys. It's embarrassing in the way all the hype for S/T was.

For die-hard PJ fans like us, people who post on this board, I would agree. I've pre-ordered the album from the 10c and will buy it from Target as well.

However, I know a lot of casual fans that would have no issued dowloading shows, whether they be audience recordings or offical boots and put the album together that way. Then, after the album releases, they'd find it online and download it for free. It's just the way people are.

I have no doubt that starting in Seattle, you'll have 6-7 Backspacer songs in the set, if not more.

    That's a nice point, but it's moot.
