Are they Backspacer's Even Flow and Alive? Both are #2 and #3 on the album. Both albums are 11 songs long. Got Some and The Fixer seem to be the big singles off of Backspacer, as was Even Flow and Alive were on Ten.
11/6/95, 11/18/97, 7/13/98, 7/14/98, 10/24/00, 10/25/00, 10/28/00, 6/2/03, 6/3/03, 6/5/03, 7/6/06, 7/7/06, 7/9/06, 7/10/06, 7/13/06, 7/15/06, 7/16/06, 7/18/06, 10/21/06, 4/10/08, 4/13/08, 9/30/09, 10/1/09, 10/6/09, 10/7/09, 10/9/09

Even Flow and Alive = Legendary songs that defined an era.
Got Some and The Fixer = Half-assed attempts at trying.

Maybe I took it a little too far, but I really don't like Got Some or The Fixer... :D:lol:

I hope you're right! Both are great songs- but from another era... don't let the haters bring you down. If those songs are hitting you as hard as Evenflow and Alive hit us back then.... rad!

  • I don't think that its productive (or fair for that matter) to attempt to compare PJ's 9th studio album to their 1st studio album- especially considering that they are being released 18 years apart. Think about yourself 18 years ago...would you want to (or be able to) portray yourself the same way now as you did then? I 'd hope that the answer is: No.

In that light, let's allow the band to move on from their earlier career. They've lived many years since then. They've grown as people. Let's allow their music to reflect that and stop expecting that each album will contain a "Black," or an "Even Flow," or an "Alive." That said, we can certainly hope for excellent songs, but that 'classic' PJ sound debuted 19ish years ago, and therefore its bound to have evolved since...

I'm excited for "Backspacer" because its Pearl Jam circa 2009. I truly enjoy that they've grown together as a band.

I have to agree here in some point, however I do think there was something eddie mentioned in the promo video about already doing something before and why would you want to do it again. Cant remember the exact words but i think it should apply here, why would they ever want another even flow or alive, those songs are great but if they were to try and recreate that, to many ppl would just give the whole "it's not as good as what even flow and alive are!" Hell i reckon if they were to go back into studio and re-do Ten now ppl would still carry on that it doesnt sound as good. The whole reason I listen to pearl jam and the only reason its all thats on my ipod, is that i find very few of their songs to sound similar to each other and there is something for all moods of the day. Yes the fixer is very poppy and got some doesnt sound as good as what it could due to eddie's voice not being as haunting as it once was but I think they are a great deal better then anything else that is spilled onto radio these days. All i can say is I'm looking forward to blasting the shit outa the cd in my car wen its dropped on the 18th of sep and yelling my lungs out on the 14th of nov :D

I didn't try to compare the two set of songs directly. I meant they are Backspacer's Even Flow and Alive, not only with track positions (2 and 3) but how they are perceived on this album, the way E and A were on Ten. I guess I'll have to wait until Backspacer comes out, and then listen to album over and over again to make that judgment. You're right, EFlow and Alive were good songs for the 1991-92 Pearl Jam (and still are), but in 2009, if Pearl Jam were to make songs just like those two, I would be disappointed.

people keep saying this, but honestly, i wouldnt :)

compared to the similarities of their last three albums, Ten style songs are positively rare.
