How bad is the area around the Detroit airport?

I'm thinking of flying out of there and I'd be alone. Just wondering.

Out of curiousity, do you have a layover scheduled for DTW, or are you driving in? If you're driving in and need any tips, feel free to PM. Also, if you have a layover, check which terminal you're flying into and which you're flying out of - you may need to go to ground transport and pick up a shuttle if you switch airlines.

I have picked up my folks there and nothing close to it scared me like other parts closer to downtown Detroit

When I lived there (2002-3), they were trying to name this "Midtown." Pretty entertaining. The area around Wayne State was being built up a bit. If you're spending any time there, go to the Detroit Institute for (of?) the Arts and check out the Diego Rivera murals. Unfreakinbelievable. Then head south on Cass Ave to Cass Cafe. Killer lentil walnut burger and Motor City Brewing's Ghetto Blaster. Hell, if you're doing one thing in Detroit, get that beer. Oh, and if it's Saturday, you can go to the Eastern Market. Hands down the best farmer's market ever, plus good wine, cheese, spice shops and a great little restaurant for breakfast. Can you tell I miss it there? People slag on Detroit, but I really grew to love it after a couple months. There's all kinds of good to be found, but it's hard to see, particularly if you're just in for a visit.
As for the airport, it's just fine. In fact, the only way you'll know you're near the city is when you hit your first car-swallowing pothole on I-94E.

stop .. you're making me homesick!! :(
Otherwise- the airport is in Romulus, not Detroit, it's actually a pretty chill area.
It's less then two miles from two major highways (I-94 and I-275). It's not bad. You'll be fine.
Could you watch the Dream Cruise from your porch?
I could have. But, to be honest, I'm kind of over it. After you see it once or twice, it's more of a hassle than anything else. Parkings already at a premium here anyway, then drop in a thousand people every few blocks... I went up to the UP last weekend to avoid it
