Burning Sky

I woke up in a "overslept" daze
looked out the window to see the trees engulfed in flames
I ran for the door tripping over my dog who was eating pancakes
outside to my amazement I noticed not only the trees a flame,
but the entire sky
it looked as if a giant campfire had been turned upside down
the flames shooting down toward the charred earth
some touching the ground, and houses on my street
I ran to the back door where a friend I have not seen in 10 years
ate the entrails from a dead lamb
upstairs to wake my girlfriend to flee for safety
she was nowhere to be found
in the bed I saw the same friend fucking my ex-wife
he had blood smeared all over his face
I threw up
they both laughed at me, never stopping or even slowing their rhythm
I ran downstairs, screaming, crying my girlfriends name
my head was spinning
a little boy walked in the front door
he looked familiar
"check the basement" he said.
I ran to the steps, the lights would not go on
down the steps I fell , busting my ass hard at the bottom
the lights came on
"SURPRISE" yelled my family and friends
I tell them my birthday was last week
I go out the garage door to the driveway and find my girl sitting in the car
I jump in and start the car
she is smiling
" I love you" she tells me in that voice that tugs at my heart strings
I pull out of the driveway, and leave my street
I ask her where we are going
she looks at me with the biggest smile I've ever seen and says
"away"
I have no idea what is going on, or where I am going
but I drive
and have never felt happier.
Peace, Love.

That is one hellacious dream. I've found that whenever I have these type of vivid deep impact dreams that stick with me for years that I'm able to trace every incident in the dream back to something that I was exposed to in the waking world - noise from newscasts, overheard conversations of other people, newspaper headlines, images and bits of television programs, and thoughts that glance my mind which I don't dwell on or explore. Each fragmentary sensory input hits my brain and is left on the doorstep. In sleep I imagine my brain to be picking up these pieces left on the neural portal so that they can be filed in their appropriate place or discarded. That's when bizzarre dreams start firing - from the pieces themselves, or from already stored sensations and memories that are passed by or touched upon along the neural pathways on the way to filing the new information or combined with the new information by deep brain logic association. I read in a book by Carlos Castenada that the way to have a dream about something is to look at it while you're eyes-wide-open awake without thinking about what you are looking at. He suggested looking at your hands without thinking about them or the act of looking at them and then trying to see them in your dreaming asleep state afterwards. That's how I developed the above theory about sensory input filing during sleep. I hope that your subconscious is starting to give you a break and sleep is a little more peaceful and not as unsettling.
