This album I kind of get the sense they just had fun, No interviews or quotes have backed this up, but it just feels to me like this is the case. I dont think many of the songs deal with topical or social subject matter, which has always been a part of the bands reportiore, but has only increased and intensified from Binaural to Riot Act to Avocado. Got Some seems political, and The Fixer could be about Obama but I seriously doubt it. Its more a personal song.

Being bogged down by politics made them a serious band. I think this time, what makes the album more interesting, from what i have heard is the lack of pissed off sentiments. Sure the bands still angry about some things (see the pointed barbs they have for Obama in Got Some), but overall these songs are just rock and roll, without the politics. We all need a Rage Against the Machine, or an Avocado, or The Clash, but sometimes its just fun to rock out to good music, non political music.

I think of a Pearl Jam recording session as a serious affair, in tone and content. From Ten all the way to Avocado, the subject matter of the songs has been very dark in alot of songs, and I tend to think of the process of writing and recording music, for Pearl jam as being about getting negative emotions and anger and sadness out, whether thats talking about the girl in Why Go, or the way a soldiers departure in war leaves their family lost, and alone in Army Reserve.

when you say "the guys" you should really just mean Ed since he handled all the lyrics and you're strictly talking about the lyrics here since musical notes can't really have social commentary.... also those were done last after the music itself was written.
