Was about February 2006. At that time, everybody was hyped for Pearl Jam's up-and-coming album, which we didn't even know what the cover looked like (PJ was slowly revealing it on tenclub.com). I remember it being in a paper bag. Then, over the next few months, we got the WWS single b/w Unemployable, there was the promo video, in which a few more snippets of songs, like Life Wasted and Severed Hand were played. May 2 rolls around, and we have a great album with an Avocado on it. We called it by its proper title, "Pearl Jam," or the "Avocado Album," or simply "S/T for self-titled." There was so much hype for their 8th album. The tour kicked off that month, and me personally, saw them in July that year. Fast forward 3 1/2 years to August 2009....
Backspacer is on everyone's minds. The same process is going on again, only this time, due to technological advances and different ways PJ has chosen to promote their new album, we are hearing little 15 second samples of the new songs on youtube and verizon. Why all the negativity towards S/T (Avocado)? I know there's a clear difference between both albums. S/T had a lot of political overtones in it (ala Army Reserve, WWS and Marker In The Sand) and Backspacer has abandoned that stance and is going towards a more (I hate to put PJ in this category) "poppy" feel to it (more radio friendly, etc). Geez, that even gave me the creeps to refer PJ as "poppy." I'm sorry! My bad!
As each new album Pearl Jam makes for us, we shouldn't abandon how we first felt about the preceding album. I know Avocado is well imprinted in all of our brains, just as Riot Act was in 2002-03, and Binaural was in 2000, and so on.
