  • why does anyone want ANY songs to be retired? are they not the same songs that got you to like pj? i dont understand why i keep reading all these posts about songs that should be "retired" i think if these people didnt go to 10 shows per tour they would think differently. i would love to go to that many shows per tour but i still wouldnt mind hearing anything pj plays.

I NEVER liked Even Flow. Any other song, I don't have that feeling for, for some reason. I have seen Pearl Jam less than ten times, and I could do without it. Check this out:

Even Flow has been played 78 times more than even "Alive"!

Of course, I bet some people think Porch is played out, and at one point I remember thinking, Oh, I bet they never play that. But then I consulted the above list, and they play it more than Rear View Mirror, which I feel like I've seen at every show?!

Well, what's important is, I am sure the band gets a kick out of playing "Even Flow," and to a point, the show might seem naked without it, so I wouldn't say.. per se.. that it needs to be retired. Just that I could live without it. :)

so the entire band should do it just because you feel yo could live without it?...the thing is, it is a staple...a song that as you said early in your post that a show would feel naked...yes i understand that maybe it's played a little too much, but i don't feel it's an annoyance...a lot of people use it as their piss break...if even flow was going to be retired...when would people go pee?

They'd probably use Better Man, Daughter, Alive, or any other song that is played a lot to go. I mean if you're OK leaving for a song to go... might as well go during a longer song that is played a lot! :)

And again - this boils down to personal preference with regards to these songs. I guess my point is that there's no reason they have to play these songs every night... a show without Even Flow feels special because its without Even Flow. And you know they see everyone flooding out during it, which makes me wonder why they continue to play it every night. At MSG last year I was up high and it was amazing watching the flood of fans leave as soon as it started.

heh i just think they aren't for the multi-show seeing hardcores. not everyone goes to a show hoping for rarities.

Plus, i think Mike just loves Even Flow. its his.

Remember in 2000 after Roskilde, they dropped Alive for the entire 2 US legs. They played it on the last show in Seattle. Honestly, listening to the boots, it seemed like something was missing. They don't have to play them every night, but keep them in regular rotation for sure.

For those who are able to attend multiple shows each tour, you should feel lucky that Pearl Jam mixes it up each night. There are many bands who play the same songs each and every night. Sure, Pearl Jam has staples, but clearly, the band enjoys playing those songs, so why deny them that?

I've only been to four concerts. I heard Evenflow, Betterman, and Do the Evolution at all four, and I loved every moment! In those four concerts, I've heard 70 different songs. That's 17-18 songs I hadn't heard before at each concert. I think that's pretty damn impressive.
  • I disagree about retiring songs, not least as there are always going to be fans who just heard Pearl Jam for the first time and those who are finally going to their first show, all these years after material from early albums was released. Those people deserve the chance to hear those songs live :-)

Also, if I'm paying at least £40 for a ticket for a band I have loved for 17 years then I am going to want to hear the songs that made me love them so much. If I didn't hear Yellow Ledbetter, Given To Fly, Dissident, Even Flow or Alive, I'd be disappointed :) I never tire of putting them on my stereo, so I can't tire of hearing them live :)

Also, all successful long term bands have those old classics that still sound amazing and often, are some of the band's best work. The Stones and U2 still play classics and I bet Lynard Skynyrd still play Simple Man and Sweet Home Alabama! Do AIC still play Would?, do Faith No More still play Midlife Crisis and Epic? Probably :-) It's the balance between playing classics and playing obscure and new material that works. I think PJ have a good balance of the two :)

So yeah, retiring schmiring. Give me Alive and Even Flow and Black and give me em now!! :-))

I would say it is extremely impressive. Pearl Jam is truly the leader of rock/classic rock bands that mix up their sets. I'm hard pressed to think of another rock band, (not Jam Band), that mixes up their sets as well as PJ. If they didn't I would attend 1 show per tour and be happy.

Pearl Jam balances well, and as I said I'm not for retiring anything.

Just in my perfect world they would mix up the greatest hits during back to back shows. Won't happen and I'm fine with how it is, just that would be my preference.

they could retire all of ten except release and I would not be unhappy
same with daughter, small town, betterman and corduroy
and I am so tired of crazy mary, seems like they play it just so victoria gets a check

call me crazy, but I want to hear more of the no code, yield and binaural songs they dont play so often !!
  • LOL :) Maybe they should do 'album' shows :) You know 'Ten live in Calgary', 'Yield' live in Philly etc :) Wonder which shows would be the most popular? :) Each album is so diverse, its kind of cool to know that each one is someone's favourite, that's what's so great, all the songs, like all of us fans, are different :) Awesome stuff :)

I like that idea, I like it a lot.
Have they ever performed an entire album in one show (besides ten)?
