Damien Echols/Army Reserve

I'm just curious, does it bother anyone that PJ has a song that was co-written by a convicted murderer? I know all about controversy surrounding the case-- I've read "Devil's Knot" and watched "Paradise Lost". I actually do believe the WM3 are innocent. But the fact remains that a surprising amount of people believe Echols is guilty. So does anyone have any resentment toward this song or feel in any way uneasy about listening to it?

Personally, since I believe Echols is innocent, I have no problem with the song. I also think it's one of their best songs.

Since I'm not a big fan of the song anyway, nope, don't care.

no problems here, i too believe he is innocent. i dont really care that most believe he is guilty, hell most people believe PJ only put out one good album, so eh......fuck 'em.

anyone who actually does any bit of research into the case though would see that it was a witch hunt.

    plus its a great song.

I believe he is not guilty.

And I like Army Reserve. Maybe my favorite from the self-titled

It's sort of like the Dennis Wilson/Charles Manson stuff

One of the victims father/step-father/uncle (can't remember exactly his relation) has been talked about in Paradise Lost, etc. And he just seems so sketchy to me...

I'm a huge fan of that song. I knew Echols co-wrote one of them, I didn't realize which one.

I don't know whether or not Echols is guilty - haven't studied up on their case. If he is a murderer, then I would have a problem with it. If he's not, then no. For now I'll continue to enjoy the song.

John Mark Byers. He was the step father of Christopher Byers, one of the victims. People suspected him for a long time because he is such a weirdo. There is a lot of things point toward him as the killer, but just like everything else in the case, you just can't find any solid evidence. However, new DNA testing has recently been done and the only DNA that can be linked to the crime scene belongs to Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of another victim, Steve Branch.

Correct. John Mark Byers used to be the loudest voice against the WM3, but has since said he thinks they are innocent. He is a strange dude. For the longest time i thought he was shaddy, but i think that was just the obvious suspect for people that supported the WM3. so in a way myself, and others were doing to him what had been done to Damien Jessie and Jason. There is nothing other than him benig weird to point to him killing those little boys. Terry Hobbs on the other hand, there is at least DNA pointing at him.

regardless of the outcome, i hope the killer or killers go down for this. and even if it turns out that it was the WM3, the song still rocks. and i supported them on the evidence or lack there of because i believe they are innocent.
    Peace, Love.

Actually, if you like any music Phil Spector produced (Ramones, Beatles and more) then you're listening to many songs with the influence of a convicted killer - though the killing was after the recording.

There is a song on Guns n' Roses' cover album, The Spaghetti Incident, that was written by Charles Manson. I think it's the last track on the record, it may even be a hidden track. But I remember when I first found out it who wrote it I was kind of ashamed that I had been listening to it. I was only 13 or so at the time. I don't think I have listened to it since.

Like I said, I believe Echols is innocent, and I love Army Reserve, so it doesn't bother me. But If it just so happened that he turned out to be guilty, I don't think I would be able to enjoy it anymore. The west memphis 3 murders was such a horrible horrible crime. It really bothers me to think about what those little kids went through.

    Ehh.

Personally, I'm utterly terrified that listening to a song will directly influence my decisions. I simply have zero personal conviction or ability to be an objective listener and appreciate musical narrative for what it is. I can't be trusted to be a sensible human being.

The 'Vs.' record alone was a complete fucking nightmare for me, for that simple reason. Got arrested for bestiality after listening to Animal, 'cause if Eddie would rather be with one, who am I to fuck another person?

Interesting question, for which I do not have an answer. However, lyrically, this song blows my mind when considered from the perspective of Echols: his wife is telling their young child that daddy is gone to war through the army reserve, when he really is in prison, and the child is getting old enough to find out the truth.
