... on CD! ! !

OMFG.
I just got a record player for the first time in half a decade or more (after my shit hand me down sony's belt crapped out on me)...

Actually, i got a whole component set up, receiver, disc changer, a "hi-fi" cassette player, and a Bang and Olufsen automatic TURNTABLE.

After half an hour of pulling my hair out trying to figure out why the fuck nothing would play -- turns out it tripped a "amplifier protect circuit" and i had to pull the old turn off then on trick -- I PUT NO CODE ON THE TURNTABLE ....

HOLY FUCKING SHIT.
Yes, thats what my ears are screaming right now.
WHO YOU ARE IS COMING ON, AND I AM GUSHING FROM THE WAIST.

OH YEAH!

Digitally clean it was a piece of crap.
A CD IS LIKE BAD ACID, NOT FOR PRODUCTION OR CONSUMPTION!

Next up ... BENAROYA ...
or maybe an old REM album.
:D

:D:D:D
yay yay yay for drifting!
:D:D:D

I gotta say No Code is one of least great sounding PJ albums on vinyl. Not a huge difference to my ears.

    Vitalogy
    Lost Dogs
    S/T
    Yield
    Riot Act

now those really show what vinyl can do.

S/T on vinyl sounds WORLDS better... In fact I would really love someone to make a digital rip of the vinyl audio from the S/T

not to hijike the OP's thread - but I've been dying trying to find a decent turn-table that has direct phono output and is mac compatible - anybody?

Bullshit...it sounds 10000000000000x better on CD in my car. That damn vinyl just screeches.

    LRP = Driftin's favorite REM.
and he will be playing it in your honor...
just as soon as the A side of Led Zep III finishes.
    :D

    And HALOO MRS. VEDDER. :D
    :D:D:D

whoever said No Code sounds no better on vinyl,
    poo to that.

and i would play Vitalogy, if i hadn't scratched up my pre-release copy beyond listenability in my pimply faced adolescence, circa '94. :D

might spin Riot Act just to see how bad it still sucks.
    lol. j/k

after REM i'm doin an X album, then, going to take a nap to Who Sell Out.
    :D

    goodnight moon.
woop. Zep is over. Rich Pageant ho!
Flowers of Guatemala on Vinyl. MMM.

I'm so glad your post flipped. You've gone from being my worst enemy to best friend in 5 seconds!

I resurrected my turntable last month, and am gradually drawing back in all the vinyl I sent away. My brother complained that he had lugged this half the length of the country, to which I said 'Actually it was in the boot of your fucking car - that's hardly putting your back out!'

Vinyl is all about the tone. I have had no real interest in listening to pink floyd for 10 years or so, having overdosed as a youth. Fire up the vinyl and the thought of Dave Gilmour's guitar sliding off into the ether makes a hell of a lot more sense to me. I've not played so much Dire Straits in my entire life! (shall I get my coat now? - Communique by the way). I don't think it's a coincidence that the history of guitar lick based rock and good fidelity record players go hand in hand.

It's horses for courses. My car cd player works great for rage and nevermind. My turntable is now bringing out all the warmth again - virgin copy of astral weeks (180gm), cat stevens, the new Yusuf is gorgeous actually. The cover and booklet was what swayed me there.

There is only one drawback to vinyl. You have to pay for it!! My bank balance is only just recovering from the first 15 years of vinyl gorging. Help!

In conclusion, I agree with you and I think it's time to get no code back to its rightful place on my ariston rd80.

I misread a previous post here. I thought it said

'Life's a rich pageant on vinyl'

    That works for me!

    Lol to your whole post.
    :D

I have a TECHNICAL QUESTION ON TABLES I NEED HELP WITH.
ANYONE UP TO THE TASK ???

This is an old Bang & Olufsen Beogram RX2 turntable.
    It's pretty bad ass IMHO.

One big problem, and one little one though.

    Big Problem:
SOME records "drag" on the platter. WTF?
First i thought it was debris on the underside. Not so.
Then i thought it was warping on the vinyl, but i've played some warped that "drag" and some that don't.
Then i thought it was the platter that had a skiffle, but ALL my records should drag if that were true.
Then i thought maybe it was the vinyl WEIGHT pushing the platter below flush of the table (see pictures of my table and you will see the platter floats at nearly the exact height of the deck, and any over weight could push it below "grade" causing this drag) but i put on Benaroya which i believe is 180g and it was just fine).

I am totally at a loss to explain this.
PJ - Vs., Queen - Jazz, and an old Chubby Checker limbo record all do this, and the "drag" which is an AUDIBLE phenomenon (you can actually hear the record making friction with SOMEthing) causes the speed to decrease and increase once every rotation. VERY unlistenable to any one with ears that hear.

    WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?
To clarify, i really don't think it is warp or wabble, becuase the Chubby Checker lies dead flat and it still drags. Conversely, i have a Petty album that DOES have a slight warp, and it plays just fine. Even though i can see it raising and lowering at the edges.

    SUCK-O.
    What gives?

    Also,
    SMALL PROBLEM:
when the needle starts in the groove, or winds out, or even in between songs with a good few grooves seperation, i HEAR LOUD NOISE. Some records even have a constant but faint "scratch" noise, sort of like a constant fuzz distortion. I'm inclined to think that my anti-skate weight on the arm may be slightly too heavy and needs to be turned back, but when i turn it back past the "0" (calibrated zero mark) even by the slightest i actually get record skipping. Not skate, but skipping in place ("up here in my tr--up here in my tr-- up here in my tr-- up here in my tr-- up here in my tr--" ad naseum) ... just trying to figure out what would cause that phenomenon? Is it just a good needle picking up empty groove noise? And the records that make that background distortion, are they possibly just worn or otherwise imperfect?
    Yes, i have D4+ and a disc cleaner which i use! :D

    Anyone?

    Thanks.
    - slightly annoyed drifting, who would really like to listen to Fat Bottom Girls on vinyl! -

I, too, love Life's Rich Pageant. I'll have to get that on vinyl. I actually thought Around the Sun was a fantastic album, too - except for the rap song anyway.

Riot Act kicks large portions of arse on vinyl - as does No Code. I absolutely love the beginning of Save You. It just sounds stronger or rawer or something.

I'll have to try spinning my Avocado vinyl again. I'm just not that big of a fan of that CD, but I only listened to the LP once, and that was on my crappy old turntable.

Speaking of turntables, I've gotta fix my old Marantz. It sounds fantastic when it's working properly, but it's hard to keep the sound coming out of both the left and right speakers for an entire album. I have to constantly adjust the knob (nothing to do with masturbating you sick bastards :)) that says "speaker A", "speaker B", "speaker A+B". I don't know if I should just pull off the knob and try to clean behind it or what. Anyone have any ideas?

as long as there are no scratches....skips,hisses or pops.......ugh.
grew up on vinyl, and yes...it has such warm tonality, but i stopped buying vinyl yeeeeeaaaaarrrrsssss ago, and i'm never going back again. ;) CDs are a happy medium for me.

and i so *heart* no code.
    8-)
    Stay with me...

I use a can of compressed air for the knobs on my guitars, amps, etcetc.

You can really hear that there is no silence between Cant Keep and Save You. The whole album sounds alot better. Some tunes on S/T sound so much smoother and ballsy.

  • No Code would sound great even if played on one of those tinfoil cylinders Thomas Edison made.

Hail Hail to that album and the men who created it!
