PASSPORTS: US citizens / Vancouver BC show READ THIS

If you are driving into Canada from Washington State and do not have a passport, this pertains to you.

In the past many of us have just hopped into our car with a drivers license and birth certificate and crossed the border without a problem. But the law has now changed and you are REQUIRED to have a passport or enhanced driver's license to get into the Canada.

This process can be time consuming so I’d say jump on it now. I’m going to take care of it ASAP because I don’t want to mess around with some stupid detail that would prevent me from getting into Canada.

Here are some helpful links:

Washington State DOL (enhanced driver's license):
http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/edlofcs.html

US State Department (passport):
http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

Good luck!

You should be mentioned that it was the US that insisted on this in the first place and Canada is just reciprocating the 'goodwill'. :)

I recently renewed my expired USA passport. I used the post office. I used the "expedite" process. I sent all of the required materials with overnight delivery. In addition to paying extra for the expedite handling, I paid extra for the passport office to use overnight delivery back to me. I sent the overnight package on a Thursday, and received my new passport the following Thursday. Yes! One week. Thus occurred in July of this year. And I got the passport book, not the card.

DUIs…. This is very important to keep in mind as this happened to my husband and I last year when we went to see Ed in Vancouver.

When you have a DUI in the US (no matter when, my husband’s was back 1998) you have to apply for rehabilitation certificate in order to be allowed back in Canada, you have to do with the Canadian Consulate in NY, I don’t know how much they charge now, in the paperwork they gave me at the border last year they had it at $600.

We got to the border and we were asked if we had been there before, we said “no” it was our first time in Canada, well we were asked to go inside, there were a lot of people there going to the show.
Anyways we were asked if we had ever been arrested, I said no, my husband said no (he didn’t think of the DUI) and then the border guy asked him again, are you sure, and my husband was like “oh well I was arrested for a DUI” and the guy was like ok so the answer would be yes, my husband said it was on 2000 and the border patrol told them that according to what he say on his computer it was on 1998 (to our surprised he had my husband’s record on his screen) … anyways he asked me to sit down and he kept my husband there forever… and told them all about how you cant go into Canada if you have a DUI blah blah unless you apply for a rehabilitation certificate through the Consulate.

The guy finally told him and I quote “Since I’m in a good mood, Ima let you go in though you have to pay $200 for a 48 hour permit” I don’t want to ruin your wife’s day (I was pregnant) .. so we were sent to the cashier and paid $200 Canadian dollars and they took his picture and gave him a passport looking certificate that stated he had to leave Canada in 48 hours.

The couple in front of us wasn’t that lucky, they both had old DUIs as well and they were turned back and sent back to the US, a friend behind me got a different guard and he went through without paying anything.

So if you have a DUI weigh your options as to whether you want to risk being turned back to the states.

bump for all of those going to BC for the show just in case, I would hate to see anyone being turned around and sent back to the states and lose their tkts the day of the show.

We were lucky (and $200 poorer) once it was all said and done but I will never make that mistake again unless my husband applies for that certificate, I would have to have a REALLY good reason to need to go to Canada though to dish the money for the rehabilitation certificate.

I think that had the guy not noticed I was pregnant he would have turned us around and sent us back, I think he felt bad for me, specially since if he had my record he could see I was clean as a whistle!

Yup it does, I have a friend whose BF was turned back at the Toronto Airport and put back on a flight to Virginia, regardless of how you go in you have to go through immigration.

“The Inadmissible status prohibits an individual from entering Canada and remaining within their borders. People often confuse this concept. They believe they can enter Canada as long as they are not driving their vehicle. That is incorrect. Having Inadmissible status means you cannot go to Canada.”

Believe me! If we had just been on vacation and going as tourists to Vancouver I would have not paid the $200 to cross the border for 48 hours, we paid it because we already had tkts for the show and the hotel was non-refundable, so we caved and paid the fee. It ended up being a very expensive concert to say the least!

A friend of mine was denied entry in 2008 based off a mj possession arrest he had back in 1983! Missed the EV show cause of it.

... though my last entry into Canada was easy (from Buffalo)... told the border agent we were going to Kitchener, London and Hamilton.... he told us to enjoy the Pearl Jam shows and he would see us there 8-)

I'm at the Washington DOL right now getting my EDL. Heads up: this takes between five and six hours to go through the process. If you don't have a passport or EDL, hurry in because there is only five weeks until the show and it takes three weeks to get the EDL.
