Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam

Ok, so I found this clip of Kurt talking about how he liked Eddie but hated "his band". Did he hate the music or was he jealous that PJ had much better songwriters and guitar players? ;)

I remember actually liking Nirvana quite a bit when I was 14, but as an adult, Pearl Jam kicks much more ass than Nirvana ever did. Not sure why this clip rubbed me the wrong way, but it did.

I think he was jealous because Pearl Jam's Ten out sold Nirvana's Nevermind. Pearl Jam's popularity soared. I think if I remember correctly Kurt said Pearl Jam were too commercial. Nevertheless, Kurt and Ed made peace with each other before he died. They danced together at the MTV music awards show...1993...I think?

I've always been a fan of both bands but of course Pearl Jam has always been my #1 band since 1992.

I loved Nirvana when they were at their peak, but looking back now I can appreciate how much better, both lyricially, and musically PJ is compared to Nirvana. Kurt was known to be a douche and stir the pot and I see that little smirk on his face and its like, dude, all you're doin is hatin' on somebody else's success. Its really childish.
  • both great posts :) Totally agree

I remember reading that Kurt hated that PJ was on the fast lane to success. He thought that they should have to pay they're dues like them and play small clubs for a few years before they sold millions of albums.

Cobain hated PJ 'cause the entire Sub Pop clan had some shit against Stone and Jeff after Green River's break up. With time, Steve and Mark from Mudhoney made "peace" with PJ but not Cobain.

I never understood that comment about paying their dues. Let's see, Green River started in, what, 1984?? So Jeff and Stone WERE playing in small clubs for several years (also count the Mother Love Bone years). Seems to me like they paid their dues and then some... more power to them for riding the wave...

honestly it could also be that he truly didn't like the music. nirvana's sound was largely more punk oriented and perhaps pj just didn't suit his taste. dude can have an opinion and share it. he didn't have much of a filter on what he said, esp when he was half cocked.
