Iron & Wine - The Trapeze Swinger

I've just been listening to the Iron & Wine at the Vera Project bootleg and I have to say I've finally been converted to this song! I've loved IAW for as long as I can remember and I've never really hated The Trapeze Swinger but it was always one of the few songs that I could take or leave - the studio version on Around The Well is a bit lifeless for a 10 minute song in my opinion.

The version Sam played at The Vera Project in May is fucking amazing! The emotion just drips from the speakers, it's so powerful. I listened to the whole boot twice then went back and listened to this song again and again. It was only when I realised that the room had gone dark that I noticed an hour had passed just playing this song. Everyone should hear this version. If you already love the song, it's perfect. If you don't already love it - you soon will!

(I would apologise for the language but some things are so far beyond amazing that they just need a 'FUCKING' in there too! :D )

You probably won't find too many Iron & Wine fans around here unfortunately.

Trapeze Swinger is definitely the song that got me hooked on Iron & Wine. Reminded me of Neil Young in a way, similar in style to one of those long, stream of consciousness type songs (like Crime in the City, I'm The Ocean, or Last Trip to Tulsa). Definitely one of those songs that you can listen to over and over.

Last time I saw Iron & Wine he was opening for the Swell Season, and he played Trapeze Swinger early in the set (1st or second song). Venue was filling up during Sams set, and near the end someone shouts out for Trapeze Swinger. Sam laughs, tells the guy he should have been there earlier.

OK, doesn't seem as funny now, but it was pretty funny then.

Can you point me in the direction of the boot too? Thanks. I've not heard any of the latest (Around the Well) tour.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

    Iron and Wine is awesome.
  • I love this band. I fortunately got to meet Sam at a pub in Temple Bar, Dublin. I got to talk to him for a little while since there were only about 15 tourists in the place. He is a very nice guy! The bartender asked who he was so I explained it to him and all he kept saying was who? Steel and Whiskey, what kind of fookin name is that?!?!

    yeah, this version is great.

Sam's playing is great too, very simple, but fits the song so well. Soft picking at the beginning, but increases in intensity/complexity during the high points of the song. That's one of the great things about Iron & Wine, is his style of playing is so subtle, yet fits the songs so well. I saw him a few years ago when he played a solo version of Jezebel, and it was the same thing. Much more powerful than the fuller version on Woman King.

The second album is a good place to start for newcomers (Our Endless Numbered Days). The third album has quite a bit of experimentation with different instruments (Shepherd's Dogs) and some people doesn't like the lo-fi quality of the first album (Creek Drank The Cradle). Hope you enjoy it! :D
