Non-phish fan attending a Gorge show

I'm whining...

....My boyfriend is a huge Phish fan. Has been for years. I been exposed to it for so long, that I'm just frankly tired of their music. I can however appreciate also they are excellent musicians. I'm sure my partner would say the same thing about Pearl Jam, that I play it too much and he is sick of it. Understood. But where are my Pearl Jam people? Here, in the forum world...that's no fun, I live in friggin Seattle and I rarely meet a PJ fan.

My problem is I kinda have to go because of my partner. He really wanted me to go, so I now have to endure extreme heat, two nights camping in the desert and two shows in a row. Camping is car camping and there are no trees.

If I survive the heat all day, I should be fine for the show, but I will be bored. I won't be on ecstasy or overjoyed when they play something they haven't played in a long time. I'll smile at my drunk messed up friends, but inside I'll be lonely for the jam. We are attending with about 16 other extreme fans. These aren't really my people. My band doesn't have ice cream named after it. I don't know, maybe it should.

Let's talk about drugs. Everyone I know will probably be taking in some kind of drug. Pot doesn't bother me. It's the acid. It's the memory of doing that once at another Phish show I was forced to endure and having a really bad trip when Phish went off on some long winded 45 minute chaotic ball of noise. That's what I don't get. It's wretched when the groove drops out and I can't dance anymore. Then you just stand there. Thank God for their lighting tech. It's the best thing about the show sometimes.

I guess I could take drugs to be like everyone else, but I won't and can't frankly. I take meds that could really screw me up if I did that. Plus, except for a Pearl Jam show, I tend to not like crowds of hot sweaty people. Plus I'm in my 40's, I'm not exactly the typical fan.

Ok, I'm done whining...if I get uncomfortable during the weekend, I've always got my real friends on the Ipod. I'll put on In Hiding and then go hide away.

Curious what others think of this whole phish scene?

    ..wait!

I just realized what is missing at a Phish show.....

    it's Ed's voice...

    ...calms me,

    no offense Trey.

While I appreciate your willingness to "take one for the team" in accompanying your dude, you need to quit whining about it and try and go into it with an open mind. If you go in expecting everything to be shitty and that it'll be two days of insufferable burdens, then that's exactly what you'll get. You'll probably see some or a lot of what you've seen and experienced before, but hey, this isn't those experiences, it's a brand new one that you can make to be however positive or negatiove you want it to be.

Yes, there are certain elements present at Phish shows. But it's a fact of the scene. Once you accept it and move past it, you'll have a much better time.

Really, with 16 other people going I don't know why you are. Your dude will have 16 others there (not to mention a community of fans), so why you decided to go and most likely be a debbie downer for him and the group is beyond me.

    It was just a vent.
  • WildsWilds Posts: 4,329
A fair Vent, but I 2nd the motion that you should not go.

I mean you don't enjoy it, and your significant other will be fine without you for a couple of days, I would imagine.

I love Phish. Went to Shoreline last night. Got tickets to the 8 festival already for myself and family.

I enjoy that scene and just being away in such an environment takes you to another world. No worries, just hanging out with good people listening to good music.

And yeah.... it's no Pearl Jam show, but it is a great experience unto itself.

I say you shouldn't go. From my own experience if you go to a show with someone that you really care about and they are clearly not enjoying it then it can ruin the entire show for you. It's not like he will have to go alone either.

No backing out now, we have spent major moola to do the camping plus two shows.

I'm sure I'll enjoy myself. wink wink. I always do this, get all worked up for something that never comes to pass.

:) Some feel euphoria and happiness on different scales. Phish obviously hits it for many people, I'm just not easy to please musically, that doesn't mean I should hide away at home. My mind is open therefore I'm going.

It will be fall here soon enough and I will have wished for hot sunny weather come November.

I was looking for a place to let it all out. This community doesn't always seem so open to people showing themselves. Should learn to go elsewhere.

Don't know what you mean about "doesn't seem open to people showing themselves?

It seems that the people who responded tried giving you some advice.

No one seemed disrespectful. What were you looking for?

Ok.... wait let me try again.

Man it's going to be so hot, that won't be easy. I can't imagine all day in a nasty hot car.

Yeah hanging with people who are fucked out of their mind whilst you are sober sucks. Really can be annoying.

Phish do tend to go on some freaky, ambient, no rhythm tangents, can tend to get boring during stretches.

Your man is lucky you are willing to sacrifice so much to hang out with him.

The real problem is all of your responses are from dudes. We tend to try to fix shit, instead of just listening and giving you a comforting reassuring listen. I don't think any of the responders were trying to be insensitive.

And yeah.... just read a few Chapters of Men are From Mars, Woman are from Venus.

I change my approach with my wife in how I respond to her venting and it's amazing how effective it is.

Instead of saying. "oh yeah, you should have done THIS" I say. "Wow that was a really frustrating situation", with a lot of head nodding and heavy sighs.

Sometime ladies just like to vent, and they don't want a solution, just a loving ear to listen.

Here's a comment from the woman side of things. I really wanted to go and see Phish. I've never seen them before (wanted to go in 99, but exboyfriend wanted to come out to Seattle to see if we could "work it out"). Any how, yea, it might suck, but I could think of worse concerts to go too.
when you get confused just listen to the music play........

"You damn well can't lick the system, but you can sure give it a good fondeling."-sleazy estate man(Hugh Laurie on A bit of Fry and Laurie)

first off......there aren't as many drugs floating around as you would think....it might be a little more than other concerts, but not that much. It only seems that way because people are doing them out in the open more. 70% of the fans now are older, have jobs, shower, don't live out of their cars. It's this sterotype that is attached to phish that people can't get over.

2nd....go, enjoy yourself, have fun...it's a phish show. Go camping, your at an amazing venue (i wish I was there). Comparing every band to PJ is going to ruin it for you (if PJ is the only thing you listen too). Go in open minded, you might actually have a really good time. Bring shade if it will be hot in the sun all day. And whatever you do, take care of your shoes!! (only a few may get that one)

I wouldn't go... but then again, I can't listen to Phish.

I just saw Phish in June at Deercreek and Alpine Valley, I saw them about 25 times from 1993 to 2004, let me tell you one thing, the shows were GREAT, they were nothing like the 2003/2004 shows I saw, the band was refreshed and you could tell they were very happy to be playing again. The seen has died down a LOT, I guess a lot of people are way older, I can also say after some of the shows I saw in 2003 and 2004 I was PLEASANTLY surprised at how good they were, Trey is sober, they weren't burned out from constantly being on tour, I had a GREAT time.

I know you love Pearl Jam as I do and a lot of other people do also, but don't think with your Pearl Jam blinders on, there are lots of great bands and great music out there. I have seen Pearl Jam about 25 times, Phish 27, RUSH 12 to 13 times and scores of other bands multiple times, I saw Grateful Dead 169 times and was always amazed talking to some people at those shows that knew or cared very little about bands other than the Dead, I know you will have a great time at Phish, they are playing really good right now, right now is the time to see them more than ever, you may never get a chance to see them when they are playing like this again, so enjoy!

Thanks for the folks that suggested I still go....

to be honest, I am a Debbie Downer. :D My name is actually Deborah. I thought that was funny when someone called me that because he was right on!..... I'm manic/depressive and don't mind admitting it. There are challenges in having to carry that around with me. Happy one moment, sad the next. I could be meeting the President and be slightly bored......Anyway, I'm rambling.

I also think I can't get into the excitement of seeing them again because my son spent the summer with me and left last week. I know he would love a Phish show. He advised I go. He said I will need some fun after he leaves. He sure is right. Now, if my 17yr old was going with me, then it would be fabulous. Then, I'd have a sober friend.

I'm proud of Trey for getting clean and turning his band and life around. Maybe Cob is right, I might be seeing a whole new scene. One that wont remind me of the bad trip I had once upon a time a Deer Creek.

Thanks for all your feedback, even the guys who are always trying to fix stuff. Thanks for the vent.
  • I would just be happy that it won't be hot at the Gorge, be glad these concerts didn't happen last weekend or the weekend before.

    An update:

I went and had a really fantastic time. The crowd has changed, what I saw was a great deal of older people. Back in the 90's everyone was so very young and really messed up.

The weekend was great. The weather was just perfect. We hooked up with some of our friends but many had their own seats so it was just my partner and I.

I adore the phish fans tho. So easy to meet people and talk about where they are from, where they are headed. So many peaceful beings. I was a bit sad to see everyone pack up their tents and RV's and leave the campground yesterday.

I did have a good time at the shows. Sober, but a good time. I couldn't get myself to dance for some reason. Then I said to my partner, Phish's music is a bit like cartoon soundtrack type stuff. Fun and silly. I ask, do they ever play songs with substance? Then, this ballad came on and the tears flowed because it was so beautiful. They always do that, take you to some crazy place, and then put you on a velvet couch.

The song is called Joy, just what I'm looking for...

    Joy

Joy is over there in her incredible clothes
She has silver silk shimmering down to her toes
I was doing the best that I can I suppose
    But that little girl dancer
    Eventually grows
    Well she grows

You can’t imagine all the times that I tried
To uncover the source of the tears that you cried
“Lets throw it away and just go for a ride”
And you’d say “ok” but you’d keep it inside
    And I tried
    I tried
    I tried
    I tried

We want you to be happy
    Don’t live inside the gloom
We want you to be happy
    Come step outside your room
We want you to be happy
Cause this is your song too

I never thought I could have it so good
You were the song that my soul understood
That time is a river that flows through the woods
And it lead us to places we both understood
    Would be gone
    Before to long
    Would be gone
    Before to long

When we were young we thought life was a game
But then somebody leaves you and your never the same
All of the places and people belong to the puzzle
But one of the pieces is gone
    And it’s you
    It’s you
    It’s you
    Joy, its you

We want you to be happy
    Don’t live inside the gloom
We want you to be happy
    Come step outside your room
We want you to be happy
Cause this is your song too

    Anytime we’ll weather this storm
Inside together you’ll see the change
    When the sun shines through

We want you to be happy
    Don’t live inside the gloom
We want you to be happy
    Come step outside your room
We want you to ge happy
Cause this is your song too
    This is your song too
    This is your song too
    This is your song too
    This is your song too
    This is your song too
    This is your song too
    This is your song too
    This is your song too

This was my 7th Phish show and I found a bit of joy.

glad you had a great time!

i took my brother to these shows and they were his first Phish shows ever. he didn't like the first night so much (my favorite of the 2), but absolutely loved the Saturday show especially the Rock & Roll, Antelope, and Good Times Bad Times

these were my 4th & 5th Phish shows of the summer and without a doubt the best shows i've seen all summer. i've been keeping track of the entire tour & listening to each show after it's available and in my opinion we saw 2 of the best shows they've done since they came back in March, the only shows that compare are the 07.31.09 & 08.01.09 shows from Red Rocks

i'm actually listening to the 08.07.09 show right now... that jam out of Sneaking Sally is amazing!

Have fun. Remember there are worse places you could be at other than a Phish show. In fact, a lot worse. Saw them at Star Lake for my first time and thought it was one of the more fun concert experiences I've ever had. Missed them at Darien last night, but will be going to as many shows as possible in 2010.

When I first heard Phish it was the Rift album. I highly recommend it, but listen to it the old fashioned way, in your CD player from beginning to end. The album artwork is extraordinary.

Another favorite song is Bathtub Gin....you have to have that one!

As far as a good ballad, try Waste and Life Boy.

Glad you had a good time. My partner said Phish music is kinda like the Peanuts dance.
  • Thanks for your help!!! I got to watch from the side of the stage since i was working at the show. It was cool watching them do their sound check. They played MGMT's song Kids, they also did a cover of Katie Perrys I Kissed A Girl which i thought was weird but hilarious. I hope i start getting into these guys a lot more

I do like Phish's covers.....they always have an air of humor and are they always customize the song to fit their style. 2001 is a fun cover.

I think one Halloween they covered the whole album of Dark Side of the Moon.

wow...you got a good show for your 1st time ever hearing them....not the best tho. Set 2 was nuts, but the kate perry part messed up the flow of the set (even though it was during Harpua where you never know what direction the show could take for a while). Harpua is also the holy grail for phish fans.....30+shows and that was my first, and probably the only time I'll ever hear it. PM me if you want some links to live shows.
  • I find I can't stop listening to them right now.

What a change from the original post. Now I wish I could go back to that weekend again.
