Some of his 80's flicks will always have a place in my heart. Growing up during that time, I loved watching his movies. Breakfast Club is one of my favorite movies, ever

Wow! I was a teenager when he directed films about teenagers. So many of my peers based their fashion decision on characters in his films. My freshman year it seemed like every other dorm room contained a Ferris Bueller's Day Off Movie Poster. He spoke to my generation.

I liked all his movies except for Pretty in Pink, because some girl in high school said I reminded her of the Jon Cryer charcter Duckie. I'm actually more like the Andrew McCarthy character who was rich and good looking. Well I'm not rich. Well maybe I'm not good looking either. OK, but I'm not Duckie!

  • I was too young, as I was born in 84 to really identify with Hughes as some kind of spokesman for a generation.

But for me, nothing beats Home Alone. One of my all time favorite films. While I have seen and can quote basically every line of Home Alone 2, which he did not direct, Home Alone the first one, still has special significance to me. I think I saw it in theaters. And just the holiday theme with the hilarious comedy, the schemes Kevin came up with the thwart Marv and Harry are just classic.

For that movie alone he was a legend.
  • Uncle Buck is another one. Such a great one. John Candy and Mac again. "whats your record for consecutive questions asked? 38. I'm your dad's brother alright"

And the hilarious scene where John is talking to his girlfriend on the phone and she wont let him finish a sentence. "would you...could you just... can i.... Could I just....would you just..."

    Such great movies

That's what I get for scanning his wiki bio instead of going to imdb.
wrote/directed....either way, pretty significant roles in some great, great films.
Vacation was one of the first R-rated movies I was allowed to watch...forever a fav.
Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller, and Planes Trains and Automobiles in a row...quite the roll! I've seen all of those at least 10 times each.

Did he say why he stopped directing?

For people in my generation (I'm 37), George Lucas and Steven Speilberg definied our childhood through their movies and John Hughes defined our teenage years. I graduated high school in 1990. No one has better been able to capture the high school experiece better than Hughes.

He absolutely nailed everything he touched and realized that movies are nothing without strong characters you can identify with.

For American kids of Generation X he was one of the most influential figures in pop culture, period. Every one of us has seen his movies numerous times and count them as some of our favorite teen movies. I often wondered why he kind of seemed to drop off the face of the earth since the mid 90's. Maybe he knew his streak wouldn't last forever.
