yes I know i started a REM thread a few days ago but this album deserves its own thread.

Ed said he listened to this album for three months straight, as a kid. literally listening to nothing but it for an entire summer.

What a brilliant album.

This song seems to have a unbelievable sense of melody and harmony.

Harborcoats-the way michael is singing the melody. The double tracked vocals during the song.

Laughing-the story of locuhon. Again, something about the way michael strings the words together makes me feel so happy.

Pilgrimage-very dark song, just the tone of it. but I like the sort of clanging of instruments, very bass sounds during the verses.

Standing Still-yet again, the sense of melody on this tune is astounding.

    I agree, although "Harborcoat" is on Reckoning.

    My favorite is "Talk About the Passion".

    The entire reason why i got totally into rem, i actually started listening to this (i knew one or two hits) but he has a point, the album is fucking amazing. Perfect Circle!!!

    Perfect Circle and Shaking Through are two of my fav REM songs.

    i forgot that i bought this record a while back, i know radio free europe and talk about the passion but nothing else really...., givin it a spin now. i wish pearl jam vinyl was as easy to find as REM vinyl.

    just got this on vinyl and am giving it a spin...haven't listened to it properly since the 80's probably...such an amazing album...takes me back to high school :D
  • they were just on Austin City Limits. I half expected to come on here and already see a post about it. was it a re-run? they were great! still haven't seen REM in concert yet.

    I was never a fan of the early REM stuff, except Reckoning. I recently decided to give Murmur a second chance, and boy, was it a great listening experience.
