I saw a new section on iTunes titled Digital 45s. So I clicked on it and bought Otis Redding The dock of the bay. The picture on the album artwork looks very familiar. Where have I seen this symbol in the center of the picture before? Anyone help, wasn't on something PJ before? By the way I am an idiot and can't seem to cut and paste the album artwork in here. Someone check it out and tell me where I saw it before. thanks to all.

In case you don't know (I'm sure some youngin's on here don't), in order to play a 45 rpm single on your record player, you needed that insert to place it on the turntable ...

maybe this will demonstate it ...

  • you also would have seen it (maybe) as the cover art to The Black Crowes "Three Snakes And One Charm". The pic is the same, except the "heads" of each of the 3 tops of the thing are snake heads. I've often thought that would be a cool tattoo.

I've got to admit, I was a little disappointed when I got my Technics and found that the 45 adapter was just a round piece of metal - not that design. Oh well... no regrets about that turntable!

BINGO!! While I know it "really" is a spacer that you popped in the middle of your 45 singles in order to play them on the turntable. However being a major Crowes fan that I am, when I first saw the image I immediately thought the dude had to be thinking of the Three Snakes and One Charm album.

You still listening to 'em? They're getting ready to drop a new album in Sept as well.

    Peace,

The other "thingy" comes with a regular modern turntable. The "inserts" we're discussing were used for record players that didn't have their own "thingy". Most people in the 70's had record players that were built into one unit with a cassette player, 8-track player and radio. The needles were cheap and sounded like shit. The "inserts" would come in packages and you would snap them into your favorite 45 records, then attatch a magnetic arm at the top of the long center spindle. The records would then automatically slide down the spindle and play in succession. It was a vile contraption compared to today's technology.

Then buy a package and use them instead.

It is so sad that we have to explain how to use and play records! I used to have a boom box that was not just a radio and cassette player but it also had a turntable that slid out from the bottom! So there I was walking out of my house to the sidewalk with my boom box in one hand and a bunch of albums in the other! I don't remember if it was a Sony or Panasonic...but I thought it was bad ass!
I do miss my 45's though.

This is what your brain may be referencing.... The single "Spin The Black Circle" cover art.
