Just reading a bit on Ten on wiki...
Which song would you say deals with depression?
Black is more heartbreak than depression, Jeremy is loneliness, not sure which would be about depression?
Thoughts?

once, deep, garden, Why Go. at a guess.

it's a very upbeat and positive feel good album.
    condescending and sarcastic since 1980

I would say Release is more sadness about a lost family member (his dad obviously)
Why Go (she smoked weed and got put in a home, don't know if you can relate this to depression)
    Once (insanity)
    Garden (hmmm not sure)

But I agree, no Pearl Jam album gets to me like Ten, singing Alive, Even Flow, Black expels all bad shit from in your system that may be weighing you down.

Isn't heartbreak and depression essentially the same thing?

You break up, you get depressed about it.

Really, besides Oceans, all of the songs are depressing topics.

Depression the mental illness and heartbreak I wouldn't put in the same box.

But heartbreak and depression are the same thing. Break-ups cause depression. Depression makes you feel like you have a broken heart. Same feeling. If you didn't feel depressed when you break up with someone, it wouldn't be bothering you. You'd be happy.

I meant depression as in clinical, when there is nothing that could cause it.

Why Go is about a girl that smokes weed and gets put in a home? I always thought it was about a girl in an insane asylum...never really saw any references to pot

    my interpet ...

black & jeremy .. powerful knock out punch. deep depression. lose of a love one, sad & lonely. everytime i hear these song's, i get goosebumps & cry. also i'm still here & nothingman (yes, not from the ten record); those get me all the time.

i bought the nevermind record before ten came out @ k-mart when i was in junior high. i couldn't stop listening to ten. i felt so deep with the lyrics & melody. maybe it was that stage of life i was living in, problems that were facing me growing up. it was an experience alright.

Black is about deep profound loss, but also the depression that goes with it...Often when people are depressed, they describe their mood as black...everything is black. No hope, no sunshine. Just black. Very common description of depressed mood....

I'd say that JEREMY...the song where the kid kills himself....deals with depression

One thing we all know is that this album helped us through shit times.
It did for me anyways, that's why I rank it at #1.

I would think "Alive" is about depression. If I understood it correctly on the VH1 special; the title was meant ironically. It were the fans that made it an anthem.

IMO Ed has a special way of seeing hope in the darkest hour and although many of those songs seem dismal, there's always a hopeful message. I remember reading that he said it was amazing how Alive began as a song of gloom and turned into a survival anthem for a generation. Sorry if I'm not making sense it's just that this whole subject matter is all a bit raw considering 3 people were killed and 9 other women wounded by a very disturbed, functional?, man who basically thought he was entitled to get laid and when he didn't blamed every woman out there. Very scary thought and literally, way too close to home.
