i beleive they plugged their guitars into a drum machine kit

*Edit* Mods: Musicians & Gearheads section please?

For the studio version, only Matt plugged his guitar into a drum machine/sequencer.
For the live version, Stone plugs his guitar in a drum machine/sequencer as well as one of 2 distortion pedals...from 2002 (showbox) - 2007, stone used a Sansamp Classic (originally taken from Jeff's pedal collection)
In 2008, Stone started using a Fulltone Distortion pro taken from Mike's collection.

Here's a picture of Stone's "You Are" effect (drum machine/sequencer): Korg Electribe ER-1 - signed by Stone himself, from my collection:

Just remember, getting this piece of gear won't give you the answers. Figuring out the exact sequence and pattern will. Good luck.

Like I said in my own post, The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" has the same effects.

I always wondered how the break during the song is played. When matt hits the high hat and stone gets back into the riff. His high hat sounds electronic, is that really just stone doing that?

almost, not really though. how soon is now is just tremolo guitar, where as in you are, the audio source is being broken up by the pattern (like a tremolo), but tremolo is constant and the pattern can only be fast or slow

I always thought the effect in "How Soon Is Now" was just Johnny Marr's awesomeness.
