Can anyone estimate for me how long it will take to get from the United Center after the shows to Union Station? Whether by taxi or public transit? Also, will there be plenty of taxi's outside after the show?

id say probably 10-15 minutes... cab is probably the best bet... there should be alot out there... in '06 we walked to a bar down the street for a drink and had them call us one

I found out after the Vic that Union Station is pretty much a ghost town after about 11:30 at night.
If I had known then what I know now...

  • Thanks. I'm coming from Cleveland and unfortunately my first day of class for my MBA program starts monday the 24th so I have to head home right after the show. I figured i'd take the overnight bus home that way i could attempt to sleep a little bit before my 9ish class in the morning. The megabus leaves about midnight from Union Station so i figure i should probably leave United Center by 11:30p.

Does the arena have a curfew? If not, will the show be over by 11:30? I don't want to hope it ends by 11:30 for everyone else's sake, but I didn't want to miss too much if i have to head out before its over.

The big question is, do I head back to Chicago monday afternoon and do the same thing over again for mondays show? I can book a one way flight from Cleveland to Chicago for cheap and then take the bus back to cleveland after the show. I wish there was an early flight from Chicago to Cleveland that would get me back in time to make my class, but i can't find anything.

im in the same boat as you... i think my bus back to champaign is at 12:30 from union... shouldnt be a problem as i think the shows have usually been over by 11:30 in the past... i think thats the curfew

as for your second question... i decided once was enough for me... im not a big traveling fan... and the bus ticket $ starts to add up... but if you find a good 10C ticket and get some good travel deals than im sure night 2 will be even better than night 1

hopefully i dont have any real work on my first day of class :?

  • I wouldn't count on a cab to be immediately available directly outside of the UC, particularly after ~ 20,000 people shuffle out the door. You can never tell for sure, I would assume the show would be over by 1130, but you'd still be cutting it fairly close unless you get lucky.

this is true... i probably overestimated the availability of cabs in my first post... therell probably be alot right when the show ends but once those are gone all bets are off... theres not much else around the UC for cabs to just cruise around looking for customers... so leave when yellow ledbetter starts maybe?

There will be cabs. Usually a mad dash for them so just be patient unless you like to run. Also, expect ALOT of panhandling at United Center. If someone hands you a postcard, don't think you can just say "thanks" and keep walking away with it.
  • On another note, is tailgating allowed at the United Center? Grilling while consuming a few drinks in the parking lot before the show?

    Thanks.

Why is it that your picture completely goes with your comment of panhandling?

typically, they run an express bus from teh united center for big events (hockey, basketball, concerts). they line them up heading east on Madison in front of the UC

it drops you off about a block from union station. i believe it now costs 2.25

they ran them for the 06 shows, so i would expect they will run them for the august shows

That is some serious dedication right there. I live in Chicago and I'm not even going to work the next day. Cant wait. It's going to be a great couple of nights.
