I think this is one of PJ's best slower songs and probably the best song off the past 2 albums. I'm not really sure why it doesn't get that much attention.
I think the band did too much with this song. Ed's demo version is way better. First time hearing it I was blowin away. But was disapoited with the studio version. Keeping it simple is sometimes the best thing to do. Thats why im worried about speed of sound. I think his demo is perfection!!! Hope the band didnt do too much to it!

I agree Gone is one of the better songs. And I think it is recognized by the fans, maybe just not by the mainstream media. Having Ed play it at Baltimore 1 after a fan request was great. I hope to hear it at one of the shows this tour.
The song is somewhat generic and boring. I never understood the hype around it, even Ed's solo version.
I actually think there are a lot of interesting things going on in that song, both lyrically and with the chord phrasing.
It doesn't really sound like any other song that I can think of, which pretty much negates the "generic" criticism.
Lyrically, the chorus needs a lot of work. The guitar part in the chorus is boring. Most songs I can enjoy playing along on guitar, but this one I always skip. Sorry, just not a fan. There is enough that agree with my opinion of the song on this board, that I don't feel to bad about it.
In my opinion it is one of the band's 5 worst songs. It bores me to death...
That's weird. But okey dokey.
Yeah, like I said "in my opinion" ... and I loved the solo version from the AC boot ... so whoever made the point that this should have been an EV solo song, that was a valid point. It loses its emotion when the whole band plays on it, IMO.
It is one of only a few songs that I would be happy to never hear live again...

It's your opinion. No need to feel bad about it. Doesn't matter if people agree with you or not. It's not like we're taking a vote.
I happen to love the guitar part in the chorus. Like I mentioned earlier ... the way it kind of bounces is really cool to me. Sometimes it helps to approach songs as a mere listener, and not as a guitar player. What is the artist trying to say, and how does he go about saying it ... that kind of thing.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
In my opinion it is one of the band's 5 worst songs. It bores me to death...
Agreed. But I can only think of three that I dislike
1. Gone
2. Get Right
3. Green Disease
I can buy Get Right. In general, not a fan of the Matt Cameron songs.
Green Disease, however, is one of my favorite songs in the PJ catalogue. Great fucking lyrics. I think I'm going to have to vacate this thread before I officially become offended.

I think Speed of Sound will have an "Inside Job" type of feel to it with the whole band on the track.

nowhere near the depths of crapness that is stones effort on parachutes
well that is my view, each to their own
oh, and get right is crap as well
I wave to all my Friends... Yeah!
My bottom 5 would probably be (in no particular order - studio albums only):
1. Get Right
2. Gone
3. Help Help
I couldn't get to 5. I guess there are really only 3 songs that I truly dislike...
Lyrically I (personally) think that's a great song.
Sammi: Wanna just break up?
Love Inside Job.
LOVE Parachutes.
Can't really choose an order, but those are definitely my favorites on Avocado (along with Army Reserve).
The only song I semi-don't like on Avocado is Big Wave.
“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” - Albert Camus
I really love this song. Studio is okay, but live is my favorite for sure.
Do you like Greivance, Go, or Glorified G?
How about Garden, Given to Fly, or Ghost?
God's Dice maybe?
