Former VP D. Cheney Secret Service protection which was due to expire a few weeks ago was extended for another 6 months.VP's usually only receive 6 months of protection at the tax payers expense they leave office. But Cheney requested an extension and Obama who Cheney has criticised in recent interviews authorized it.

If Obama would have denied it he would have been forced to hire his own security or go without protection.
Cheney can ask for another extension when the new 6 month term runs out,and sources close to him predicted that he will do so.

Yes, I dislike Cheney but I don't think this a big deal except it comes from taxpayer funds. You know how this works politicians will look out for other politicians.

My main problem though is that Cheney has made and has more money to provide his own security protecton for his lifetime and his children. However, I get the feeling he likes the status of having the government Secret Service protecting him than some private security firm.

I think he likes being a big shot and that's why even being out of office he STILL likes to run his mouth.

Yep, pretty much how I see it.

You'd also think the Republicans would be outraged by this! I mean, afterall they don't like their tax money going anywhere!
Then again, they'd probably just blame Obama for more spending...

why am i not surprised by this? is old dick getting a little paranoid in his old age? i am completely opposed to cheney getting more government funding for security. he has screwed up enough that i do not feel he deserves it. i agree with the posters that said he has made enough money from this country and his halliburton ties that he can pay for his own damn security. BUT there is a political side to this as well.

suppose obama said no and declined his request for taxpayer secret service protection. what would happen then? obama would be roundly criticized as a partison hack, or worse yet and even more conceivably on right wing radio he will be called a racist. if he does not give him the protection, when obama is out of office his successor may decine him secret service protection as well out of revenge. my guess is that this is something that has always been done and if self preservation is an instinct that obama has he would continue to grant this protection. besides, cheney is not long for this world anyway. how much more can it realistically cost us? with that bad heart i am guessing old dick will kick it before obama leaves office.

  • This has been common for decades now. Since the departure of Truman it has been common. It's just not common knowledge. Cheney knows he is better off like so many former VPs before him having Secret Service protecting him.

How long do former presidents receive Secret Service protection after they leave office?

In 1965, Congress authorized the Secret Service (Public Law 89-186) to protect a former president and his/her spouse during their lifetime, unless they decline protection. In 1997, Congress enacted legislation (Public Law 103-329) that limits Secret Service protection for former presidents to 10 years after leaving office. Under this new law, individuals who are in office before January 1, 1997, will continue to receive Secret Service protection for their lifetime. Individuals elected to office after that time will receive protection for 10 years after leaving office. Therefore, President Clinton will be the last president to receive lifetime protection.

    US Secret Service...FAQ

I always thought it was a lifetime protection they recieved for being President but I think if they request more years they would recieve it from whomever is the sitting President. In Obama's case I think he should request it, the hate for him is rising.

i always thought it was lifetime protection for presidents as well. but i thought i had heard several years ago that it was only for a specific time after leaving office. i agree with you on the need for obama to have more SS coverage when he leaves office for the exact reason you listed. there are some crazies out there and a lot of them have high powered rifles.
