I want to see PJ jam-out more! Who's with me?!?!

I'd love to see more improv, more playing off eachother, more back and forth.
PJ's live shows tend to stay in the same script and while still one of (if not the) best in the buisness as a live show, they seem live they have become very "cookie-cutter" of late.

Mid-90's, they were tinkering around with their sound, trying new stuff, and I LOVED that!
Granted, I'm not saying they become Phish or DMB, but I feel that they could just every once and a while jam out on some tunes.

They just seem too f'n talented to stick to the robotic scheme.

Who's with me?

I'm with you, but this better not mean I would have to start dropping acid again.

maybe the band should??? the dirty frank/rats jam is SICK at this show...

    05/13/93 - Slim’s Cafe: San Francisco, CA [110m]
    attendance: 900
soundcheck: Daughter instrumental, Why Go, Blood instrumental, Rats and Release guitar warm-ups, Animal instrumental, Animal, Dissident
set: Animal, Go, Even Flow, Blood, Daughter, W.M.A., Dissident, Why Go, Alive, Hard to Imagine, Rearviewmirror, Better Man, Dirty Frank/Rats, Baba O’Riley, Once, Jeremy, (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun)/Porch/(Tearing), Release, Alone, (Dirty Deeds)/Whipping, Leash, Sonic Reducer
notes: This was a secret show was a benefit to assist in legal support for a member of the Surfrider Foundation. PJ is billed as the “David J. Gunn Band” and most of Vs. (plus ‘Better Man’ and ‘Whipping’) premier as they have just completed recording the new album. The band even asks for requests at this show. Ed jokes around: “We’re accepting any donations of acid that you may have. Just put it in a little envelope with your name on it … and if we write a great song while we’re on it, we’ll put your name in the credits.” A guitar riff from Van Halen’s ‘Eruption’ is played between ‘Why Go’ and ‘Alive.’ ‘Alive’ is dedicated to Ed’s uncle, Freddy Vedder. The transition from ‘Dirty Frank’ to ‘Rats’ is very cool sounding.A bit of AC/DC’s ‘Dirty Deeds’ is played.

  • sorry. no way i want to see them jam. they have always been terrible at jamming. i don't need an 8 minute even flow or a 8 minute crazy mary with boom playing sloppy circus organ. every time they bring that one out i feel like i should be eating cotton candy and popcorn.

then what do you call porch or RVM. there is no other band on this planet that sounds like that when they jam out to those songs.

Pearl Jam was in fact very good at jamming, but i think it wasnt easy for them to keep it up for two reason. One being they got punkier where the songs got shorter and more structured. The other one is eddie becoming more and more active with his guitar during the live shows+in their writing. This led to less room for mike & stone to play in.

Some of those old porch jams are flat out amazing.

i would agree. i think the drumming change had a lot to do with it too. the jamming started going way down when Dave A left.

I love a good "jam"...but PJ hasn't pulled it off the way I define it all that well....RVM jams are pretty cool, but a jam to me is when the music grooves back and forth between band members...say Stone, Ed, Mike on guitar. A good jam is spontaneous as well and I never have heard much of this..at least not in the last 10 years.

Not that they aren't completely up to it...I just haven't heard it allot on boots, live etc....w/ some exceptions. Solos...ya plenty of those but not my cup o tea. IMOA Lost interest in that after my metal days in the 80s

yeah but that was like 17 years ago. Mike isn't the player he once was and Dave is long gone.

And I also think that a lot of today's yuppie concert-goers don't have the attention spans for long jams anymore

No, i agree that the band is different now, although I think Mike is WAY more consistent now than he was then.

well maybe he's more consistant now from a technical standpoint. but in his prime, when he was up there shredding and improvising during things like Porch, you can forgive some sloppiness because the energy and intensity makes up for it.

i think the band live from '00 - present is WAY better than all previous years. sure, the intensity and insanity of the band was better in the earlier years, but as far as better at the music they play and an overall greater show, i think '00 - present is by far the best pearl jam. and going even further, i'd say '05 - present is the best pj has ever been and ever will be.

Well I agree that 2000 is among the best they've ever been. I'd make an arguement for 1998 as well. But I'm not sure if I'd agree with '05-'08 being the best they've ever been or will be. Not that I have anything negative to say about their performances during that timespan, but I can't think of anything would make me put it above anything from 1998-2003.

any year of pj is amazing but i wasnt so crazy about eds '98 live voice. the most distinguishably different ed sound then any other year, in my opinion. still great though. '00 was very raw and crunchy .. love it. '03 was very loose and free .. love it. but '05 - present i feel is just a combo of all their different elements and aspects of a great live show. EASILY the best setlists too. idk .. i just like how they sound and perform the best from this current time period. but any year of pj was a great one.

Yes, this band should jam shit out more often-- I love when they completely let loose and give in to the moment on stage. I think "Pry, To" could actually be a really cool 4 or 5 minute jam if they wanted to fuck around with it. "Out of My Mind" was pretty much an improvisation, I believe, and that is such a cool song.
