Less Pearl, More Jam
I want to see PJ jam-out more! Who's with me?!?!
I'd love to see more improv, more playing off eachother, more back and forth.
PJ's live shows tend to stay in the same script and while still one of (if not the) best in the buisness as a live show, they seem live they have become very "cookie-cutter" of late.
Mid-90's, they were tinkering around with their sound, trying new stuff, and I LOVED that!
Granted, I'm not saying they become Phish or DMB, but I feel that they could just every once and a while jam out on some tunes.
They just seem too f'n talented to stick to the robotic scheme.

I'm with you, but this better not mean I would have to start dropping acid again.
Hahahaha!
maybe the band should??? the dirty frank/rats jam is SICK at this show...
05/13/93 - Slim’s Cafe: San Francisco, CA [110m]
attendance: 900
soundcheck: Daughter instrumental, Why Go, Blood instrumental, Rats and Release guitar warm-ups, Animal instrumental, Animal, Dissident
set: Animal, Go, Even Flow, Blood, Daughter, W.M.A., Dissident, Why Go, Alive, Hard to Imagine, Rearviewmirror, Better Man, Dirty Frank/Rats, Baba O’Riley, Once, Jeremy, (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun)/Porch/(Tearing), Release, Alone, (Dirty Deeds)/Whipping, Leash, Sonic Reducer
notes: This was a secret show was a benefit to assist in legal support for a member of the Surfrider Foundation. PJ is billed as the “David J. Gunn Band” and most of Vs. (plus ‘Better Man’ and ‘Whipping’) premier as they have just completed recording the new album. The band even asks for requests at this show. Ed jokes around: “We’re accepting any donations of acid that you may have. Just put it in a little envelope with your name on it … and if we write a great song while we’re on it, we’ll put your name in the credits.” A guitar riff from Van Halen’s ‘Eruption’ is played between ‘Why Go’ and ‘Alive.’ ‘Alive’ is dedicated to Ed’s uncle, Freddy Vedder. The transition from ‘Dirty Frank’ to ‘Rats’ is very cool sounding.A bit of AC/DC’s ‘Dirty Deeds’ is played.
then what do you call porch or RVM. there is no other band on this planet that sounds like that when they jam out to those songs.
8/7/08, 6/9/09
Some of those old porch jams are flat out amazing.
i would agree. i think the drumming change had a lot to do with it too. the jamming started going way down when Dave A left.
Not that they aren't completely up to it...I just haven't heard it allot on boots, live etc....w/ some exceptions. Solos...ya plenty of those but not my cup o tea. IMOA Lost interest in that after my metal days in the 80s
Point taken....guess I don't have enough of their earlier live material
check the porch jam from DITP...damn good jamming there. not only to they morf into jesus christ pose in the beginning, but towards the middle they sound like '71 Dead. good shit
yeah but that was like 17 years ago. Mike isn't the player he once was and Dave is long gone.
And I also think that a lot of today's yuppie concert-goers don't have the attention spans for long jams anymore

No, i agree that the band is different now, although I think Mike is WAY more consistent now than he was then.
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
well maybe he's more consistant now from a technical standpoint. but in his prime, when he was up there shredding and improvising during things like Porch, you can forgive some sloppiness because the energy and intensity makes up for it.

Well I agree that 2000 is among the best they've ever been. I'd make an arguement for 1998 as well. But I'm not sure if I'd agree with '05-'08 being the best they've ever been or will be. Not that I have anything negative to say about their performances during that timespan, but I can't think of anything would make me put it above anything from 1998-2003.

any year of pj is amazing but i wasnt so crazy about eds '98 live voice. the most distinguishably different ed sound then any other year, in my opinion. still great though. '00 was very raw and crunchy .. love it. '03 was very loose and free .. love it. but '05 - present i feel is just a combo of all their different elements and aspects of a great live show. EASILY the best setlists too. idk .. i just like how they sound and perform the best from this current time period. but any year of pj was a great one.
