London to Manchester to London - Help please?

Hello!

I've got tickets for the upcoming gigs at MEN, Manchester (17/08) and O2, London (18/8). I have never been to the UK before, so some travel advice would really help!

- I want to reach Manchester by latest 8am on the day of the gig (from London, where I will be based during my trip). Or sooner, even the night/day before is alright if that means saving on travel-costs.
- I want to reach back to London by latest 8am on the day of the gig (or earlier). Leave Manchester right after the gig.. save the drinking for post-O2 ;)

Quite simple :) Since it's the first time I'll be watching Pearl Jam, and am traveling quite a distance to do so -- I'm all up for queuing up.

Please help me with an itinerary? I'm not sure sure who the train system in the UK works -- but apparently late-night/early morning trains are fairly expensive?

1. I don't mind the bus, train, or anything else that'll get me to the shows in time.
2. Is there any fan from London who's doing the same trip, who I could travel with (splitting costs?). It's me and a friend.
3. Are there any fan buses / train-trips planned already for this trip on this forum, which I may have over-looked?
4. What time do these gigs start / end, typically?

Thanks and Cheers!

    Astoria 20/04/06, Leeds 25/08/06, Prague 22/09/06, Wembley 18/06/07,
    Dusseldorf 21/06/07, Manchester 17/08/09, London 18/08/09, LA 06/10/09, LA 07/10/09.

Ain't gonna be any middle anymore.
  • When a friend and I went to see NIN in Manchester and London a couple of weeks ago, we took a megabus (http://megabus.com/uk/) down to London. It's really cheap, left at 4am, arrived in London at 8.30. (Note: Waiting rooms in Manchester at Shudehill Interchange were closed during the night, we slept in some kinda entrance room besides parking ticket machines... It's fun now to think back, but it wasn't all that great really) You can also check http://thetrainline.com/
I think curfew at M.E.N. in Manchester is 11pm, at least that's what we got told when NIN played. And I believe that we got told the same for the O2, but I'm not sure really.

got a return megabus reservation I'm now not going to use if you want. (got it as soon as shows were announced but have now more expensive but more social arrangements)

    Megabus Journey information:
    Sun 16 August 2009
London, Victoria Coach Station to Manchester, Shudehill Interchange
23:00 Depart London, Victoria Coach Station
    03:00 Arrive Manchester, Shudehill Interchange

    Tue 18 August 2009
Manchester, Shudehill Interchange to London, Victoria Coach Station
    04:00 Depart Manchester, Shudehill Interchange
08:30 Arrive London, Victoria Coach Station

I only paid £2.50 for it :o so even if you buy me a beer I'd be making a profit!
it's an e-ticket and is not nominative so I can just forward the email to you and you print it.

Oh it's like a ready made dream bus to PJ gigs!

Nice move for offering it, Sandra :D
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

The 'more social' part might become 'more anti-social' if the folks don't take a liking to overly boisterous off key singing and laughable air-drumming!
115 bucks for half a haircut by a novice? I want my money back!

I believe/hope they were heavily pre-warned that it wasn't an opportunity to catch a couple hours sleep on the way to London.
Remind me to buy some booze before the Manchester show so we have it for the trip.
  • yes, this all sounds very much fun! space for another two in the bus?

There's definitely one seat available, possibly two. Email that crazy woman at einatshaul@hotmail.com to get more details and confirmation. Note that this is only the Manchester to London leg. It's a one-way bus, so you still need to arrange to get to Manchester

The bus company might have a problem with that. Capacity is pretty strict.

I don't plan on staying seated, but that's factored into the bus's capacity limits.
