Treasure Hunt...why the secret?

I know that this was supposed to be a "viral" thing. I get that, but why was there nothing whatsoever at http://www.pearljam.com announcing this? And unless I didn't get the email, nothing from 10C, either.

I'm not here to gripe or persecute the 10C--I love the 10C! They have done a fantastic job for so many years now. But I just don't understand the logic behind the way in which information is (or rather is not) being disseminated by the fan club regarding Backspacer. This treasure hunt seems like EXACTLY the kind of thing we would, and should, be hearing first from the fan club.

Kat, if you are out there, can you comment?

when they announced the recent tour dates/ fixer single info, they said that album art was soon to follow.

    it followed

besides....is album art really something you need a day in advance to prepare yourself for?

Because it was a viral thing, like you said. Are you really complaining about this :?

you'll know everything you need to know about the album in due time and in 2 months there will be no more mystery at all. I reccomend trying to enjoy the secrecy instead of bitching about it.
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

i hear what youre saying... i kept passing by the thread talking about the hunt and didnt realize what was going on til awhile later... seems odd the official announcement or "start" of the hunt was on tom tomorrows site instead of here... nice to encourage traffic to his site but not logical for the average fan... and since i get most of my music news from this site and word of mouth i may never have heard about it had i not been very bored yesterday

its obvious 10C had a big part in this unveil though so you cant really hold it against them... in the end we all found out and thats what counts... as it is i think they were a little bummed that we all teamed up and shared where they were instead of individually scouring the web... oh well :D

It's not about the album art. The song, maybe, but not the album art. I'm just really suprised that the whole treasure hunt thing isn't on the website. If it weren't for this forum, I still wouldn't know about a new track being released. To me, it seems like it would be in the band's best interest to spread the word. Instead, it's like it doesn't even exist...

but this forum is on the site, and you already said that you understood it was a viral marketing thing.....so what's the problem again?

If you consider this bitching, then you need to calm down a little. The band/10C can do whatever the hell they want, and I have no real grounds to complain. It's the band's intelectual and artistic property, not mine.

Maybe my tone didn't come across well in print. I am just confused by the logic of doing things like this. It seems like they are intentionally trying to keep things low key, and I don't understand why. I'm not advocating that they go on TRL (is that still around, anyway?), but this is almost getting to be monastic--by their publicity standards!

I think this was fun and a great idea! I like a secret every now and again :D

the low key aspect was because it was just suppose to be a little treat/suprise and delight, as opposed to being something to lose sleep over.

they're not doing the whole album release as a low key venture....

don't you remember who was on the very first Conan Tonight show to promote their new album?

while i see your point - as i said before - i actually think this is pretty high key for an album art release

it was on how many music media sites?

usually new artwork would be something only diehard fans are interested in... when "joe musicfan" stumbles across the news on rollingstone maybe it will interest him and get new people into the band

the bonus song was just a treat... it was never meant to be the release of a second single... i dont think the radio station are gonna be playing it or anything

Yeah, I can see your point well. Like many things Pearl Jam, it remains an enigma.

At any rate, it's a damn good song. Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but I love it--a lot. I haven't had this kind of immediate connection to a Pearl Jam song (ITW excepted) in a long time...maybe Man of the Hour. Sure it's premature, but this might just be their best song in a decade...

They did post it on the PJ Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace accounts too. Pretty much everywhere EXCEPT the home page.

How about a simple answer like-- "It's supposed to be fun!" ;)
