What's the strangest PJ song you have?

I bought a new mac last week, and have been going through the process of putting all the stuff I listen to on it in lossless format. While going through my CD collection last night, I found some CDR's from years back labelled "Random Pearl Jam stuff" so stuck it on. Turns out it contains a load of old unofficial bootleg stuff , including what seems to be the first time they play Betterman (Ed says beforehand something like "I don't think you'll have heard this before, this is a new song but it was written a long time ago. This is dedicated to the bastard who married my momma"), the first time they play Last Exit, them covering Smells Like Teen Spirit etc... But by far the strangest one is an early, slow acoustic sounding version of Courdroy, sounds so different slow.

Anyone else got any strange songs?

Better man was first played live (with PJ) 5/13/93 at a secret show at slim's cafe in San Francisco

    From five horizons:

This was a secret show was a benefit to assist in legal support for a member of the Surfrider Foundation. PJ is billed as the "David J. Gunn Band" and most of Vs. (plus 'Better Man' and 'Whipping') premier as they have just completed recording the new album. The band even asks for requests at this show. Ed jokes around: "We're accepting any donations of acid that you may have. Just put it in a little envelope with your name on it ... and if we write a great song while we're on it, we'll put your name in the credits." A guitar riff from Van Halen's 'Eruption' is played between 'Why Go' and 'Alive.' 'Alive' is dedicated to Ed's uncle, Freddy Vedder. The transition from 'Dirty Frank' to 'Rats' is very cool sounding.A bit of AC/DC's 'Dirty Deeds' is played.

I could be wrong but I think this is a different show from the one you are talking about. Somewhere I have the version where Ed says "this is dedicated to the bastard who married my mama," I don't think it was this one, but my memory is escaping me right now.

The original version of immortality played in Boston way back when with different wording is one that comes to mind for me.
  • damn all my old PJ rarities are on my old computer. i do remember a weird version of Red Mosqito where Mike's guitar sounds like its caught in a wood chipper for most of the song. very odd, but i likes it!

That would be the same show. That's the night they played like a few minutes of Teen Spirit and Stone says something like "remember we played it first"
    Go Get 'Em Tigers!

The version of Betterman you speak of was played 4/11/94 at the Boston Garden. I was there and it was awesome. At that same show, they played Immortality for the first time live with completely different words than the studio version.

  • Yeah, that would make sense. I found the original bootleg CD I got them off earlier (it's called Unplugged and Undrugged) and it has a load of Vitalogy songs with different names (no doubt due to the bootlegger not knowing what they were actually called - Last Exit = Three Days, Whipping = Already In Love etc...

actually, the version the OP mentioned is from 4/3/94 in Atlanta. Better Man was not played on 4/11/94. Both shows are very common in the live show community.

Actually, it is 100% from 4/12/94 at the Orpheum theatre in Boston. The Boston Garden show is from 4/11/94 and better man was not played.

I have the atlanta show and both boston shows archived and I just listened to them and the OP is referring to the 4/12/94 show with regards to better man.

Stupid Mop. So strange, I can't play it.

In my Tree, Fargo 2003 - Very strange

Alive, Mountain View 2003 - Very strange and funny.

You are right about the playing of Betterman, but Eddie definitely said that line about "the bastard that married my mama" at the 4/11/94 show. I think he said it at a few shows.

I do think Evil Little Goat is kinda strange. Ed sounds like he's singing it out of a bucket. Guess it was some kind of demo.

Kid Rock singing with Eddie? I don't think it gets much more weird than that... well, maybe Rodman.

I promise you all, the "dedicated to the bastard that married my momma" line is from 4/3/94. I have heard all 3 of the Boston shows many times.

I'm not trying to start anything, believe what you want. and if you're listening to the "Vortical" bootleg thinking that is the Boston show, you are mistaken. that bootleg was spliced together with several shows, alot of it is Atlanta 4/3/94.

apologies to non-entity - you are indeed correct.

Originally I only listened to my recording of the 4/12 show for whatever reason contains the same line, but I listened to the 4/03/94 show and you are indeed correct. What do I know anyway? :D

Got a shitty bootleg of Ed doing Redemption Song. It's cool, but wish I had a better copy.

I don't doubt you and I, too, don't want to start anything, but he did say that line on 4/11/94 also. It's not on the boot, but he said it.

I hate you I love you. Dead Milkmen song. Probably the most obscure one I have. It's not listed in the PJ catalog that I can find. Don't know where it's from though, just on a boot I bought. :)

How do you guys know all this shit? And how do I get a hold of some of these songs? Can I mail you guys a disc and you share them?

  • Ok, so this is some debate I've started...

I just figured it was the first time it was played because of Ed saying "you won't have heard this before"

Got the fast version of Wash too, it's on the CD that came with the Avocado pre-order
