anybody find this song sort of like Gone from Avocado?...or at least in the AOL Sessions video?...just the mood it presents especially when Matt starts backing Ed on vocals. anyone agree?

I kind of know what you're saying, but I think Speed Of Sound is waaaaaay better than Gone. Gone suffered from a poor chorus, the rest of the song is great. For some reason I'm getting a No Code-esque melancholy vibe from SOS.

    yes.

i agree here too.. to me it's almost like a no code/binaural-ish vibe.

and in no way is that depressing.
i'm more a fan of popular bands.. like the bee-gees, pearl jam

agreed. it's beautiful right now. However, i think this song has better lyrics and presents much more room for the band to do something unique. It will have piano as well
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

Totally. In all honesty I would be happy if this was the album version. Let's hope the changes are subtle.

Reading the track by track descriptions from that German magazine article that surfaced a while back, they described the song as "Exotic. A strange pop song with a different sound than the rest of the album and its clear-cut production. Still: piano, tingling, suspense…" Take from that what you will!
  • Speed of Sound is a much better song in my opinion. More melodically challenging, the fingerpicking is actually quite skilled with some nice chord changes, they build on each other in a subtle, yet striking way.

Sounds like it will be different, but I think at the core the song will be the same. If you look at Gone they pretty much just followed Ed and put a rock band on top of the Gone demo. I hope and think that this time around we see the other members add to the song like they did to Can't Keep. Here was an Ed solo song that I liked, but liked it a whole lot more on the album.

Haven't heard Speed of Sound. I'm trying to avoid as many of the new ones as possible.

However, if it's better than Gone, then that's awesome. Because Gone is a very good song in its own right.

    Reminds me of MOTH
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

I just assumed it was one Ed was playing on his solo tour, but I don't know for sure.

I've only listened to "Got Some" because it was on Conan, and The Fixer, because it's unavoidable here. I'm trying to avoid everything else for the next month and a half.

No it's a great quality studio demo. I admire your iron will!

It isn't hard. You can avoid most stuff if you don't actively go looking for it.

You know, if that's the way you want to go ;)

Trust me, I have no will power at all! Given that most records take more than one listen to grow on me, I think the 'magical first listen' is somewhat over rated.

    That sort of is true.

I've never been a strict constructionist on this issue. I had a roommate in college who refused to listen to ANYTHING from a new PJ album before it came out. If a song came on the radio, you'd have to change the channel. Wouldn't listen to singles, B-sides, nothing.

I'm not like that. I'll listen to whatever is out there for "official" consumption. But I'd prefer to open the majority of my presents on Christmas, so to speak.

Ah, will power. Must be nice.
Especially with an album like this with only eleven tracks, I'm regretting the fact that I've heard Got Some, The End, Speed of Sound, Unthought Known, and The Fixer. That's five out of eleven, meaning I've got roughly twenty minutes of new Pearl Jam to look forward to. Oh well, I'm still excited

To be fair this is for official consumption, it was part of the art work treasure hunt. But I do know what you mean. I think the only time the first listen is truly special is when you discover an album with absolutely no anticipation or expectations. I remember that happening a lot more when I was younger and I would pick up classic albums that I had no real idea about.

I hear ya, but really only one of those performances is actually on the album. I'm expecting something special from the band when they get their hands on Eddie's superb new songs.
  • i'm in agreement with slightofjeff...i say anything officially released is fair game...both for discussion and for listening...also anything played live that you are in attendance to the show or officially released on boot.

but back to my original SOS/Gone comparison...i really like Gone a lot...def in my top 3 songs on avocado, but what really made me love Gone was the AOL Sessions video...i just thought that was a beautiful performance...i look forward to hearing the studio version of SOS
