Speed of Sound Lyrics/Thoughts?

TheRiotActTheRiotAct Posts: 131
My take..Beautiful lyrics.

Yesterdays how quick they change all lost and long gone now.
Want to remember anything moving at the speed of sound.
With the speed of sound.

And yet im still holding tight
To this dream of distant light
And yet somehow ill survive
But this night has been a long one
Waiting on a sun
Just don’t come

Can I forgive what I cannot forget
and live a lie?
I could give him one more try

Friday nite is drive inside just looking for some peace
Everytime I get me some it gets the best of me
Not much left to see

And yet im still holding tight
To this dream of distant light
And that somehow ill somehow survive
But this night has been a long one
Waiting on a word
That never comes

The whisper in the dark
Is that you or just my thoughts?
Im wide awake and reaching out

Its gone so quiet now
Could it be I’m farther out
Moving faster than the speed of sound

I heard the same except for what I put in bold.

this song would be good for a B-side, instead of an album track

We'll see what the full band adds to it. I think that European mag said it was mid-tempo

    That's really good.

But I think the Friday night part is "Why deny this drive inside"

Edit: sorry, someone beat me to it.

  • I hope the band doesn't add too much flash to this song. I remember listening to the Gone demo from the Ten Club vinyl and thinking it would make a great quiet song on the album.

But then the S/T version was up-tempo and I think it lost a lot of its inner-personality. I don't hate the S/T version, it's still a great song. Just liked the Ed demo better.

Speed of Sound seems to be such a slow, brooding reflection piece. I'd just hate to see it turn into an up-tempo song.

Maybe I'm just partial to stuff like Immortality and Indifference. I'm sure the band will not disappoint. Can't wait for the new album!!

And thanks guys for the sneak peek demo!
  • Nice ballad. I wonder how this will be reworked to be more of a PJ tune.

This was the review of the song from the German magazine:

"Speed Of Sound: Exotic. A strange pop song with a different sound than the rest of the album and its clear-cut production. Still: piano, tingling, suspense…"

I love it! After hearing this version and the eddie solo live version this song is in my top 5 favorite Pearl Jam songs. Can't wait to hear the album version. Seems like most of favorite Pearl Jam songs are the softer one's (Release, Elderly Woman, Present Tense.)

For those that say this is a good B side they are crazy!

Anyone else prefer the softer tunes as opposed to the louder ones?

These are not Ed's best lyrics imo. They have been putting some pretty spotty lyrics into the last two albums. I loved Avacdo as a whole, but Severed Hand,Come Back and Mikes "Let me run into the rain" faux paus from Inside Job, are puzzling to me.

beautiful. eddie's voice takes me to another place. the lyrics are poignant and reflective- hope they don't speed up the tempo- i'm sure there'll be plenty of that on the album- the song is gorgeous as it is- that's my story and i'm stickin to it. :|

i had a thought that the "sun" that "just don't come" might be: son

either way, it is a beautiful song

I think these lyrics are amazing. Reminds me of Light Years and such. I'm curious what the metaphore Speed of Sound stands for. Any thoughts? Maybe the song before this song on the album - Supersonic - will give us an insight. I think that these two songs may be linked.
