Binaural imagery that PJ has used in their stickers, shirts, etc. I just discovered today what they are based on. I always thought it to be an imaginary thing (the head dude), but it's based on something real. And so I thought I'd share the visuals below. Sorry if this is not news to you.

Caption to both images: Gordon Hempton records the sounds of the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park in Washington State. Hempton's mission is to use his binaural recording system to record the last few quiet places on earth where the sounds of human activity have not drowned out nature.

I thought I recognized that! It's worth checking out the wiki site on binaural recording, if any of you have an interest, as it has a lot of interesting stuff on how it works.

The name has to do with the recording technique - and it's more about listening with headphones on, not which medium you use to listen to it on.

Hey Bro take it easy... my statement must not have come across correct to you and your head phones.
But I was trying say is how this album was recorded differently and has allot of sounds in the background.
    Hence the name they used.
And yes with the correct stereo and speakers you do get a better sound off the vinyl and don't need head phones to achieve the best results.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to come off as jerky or anything.. I can tell you 100% though that the title "Binaural" doesn't have to do with background noises necessarily, but the method of recording they used (called binaural recording) which has to do with creating sounds that seem to be coming from different locations relative to the listener - above you, below you, in front of you, behind you, to your left, etc.
Binaural recording, however, DOES require one to wear headphones to get the full effect, as the first sentence in the wikipedia site says correctly: "Binaural recording is a method of recording audio which uses a special microphone arrangement intended for replay using headphones". I agree with you that, as a generalization, vinyls sound better than CDs (they have an added warmth that I really enjoy), but if you read up on binaural recording, you'll find that to get the effect that the producer intended, you must wear a pair of headphones.

    It's cool Bro,

I do stand corrected in regards to the head phones.
I just read up on this and now of course need to hear it via head phones.

(Once recorded, the binaural effect can be reproduced only using headphones. It does not work with mono playback; nor does it work while using loudspeaker units etc..)

yeah, I think the parts of the images which Klausen or Ames (?) added with the keyhole are a nice touch, and may reflect how you're supposed to listen to this album (headphones). unlock to listen!

as a personal sidenote.. it is really weird that I bought this album back in the day on vinyl and used to listen to it on my headphones, and that's how I fell in love with it. this before I even knew about the recording, about the sound, about the imagery.
at the time I did not buy PJ on vinyl at all, but the sole reason I got this one is because it was a double vinyl, and I thought it tied in nicely with the whole two theme: photo of two rings on the cover, two ears, two records!! I knew Binaural had something to do with two ears, or something two..that's it!

by the way, who the hell is this in the picture below from the Binuaral booklet?

    3774996403_736ca66302.jpg

sorta looks like Eddie, but I believe he only had blonde hair in 2003.
now, it's not Boom, not Tchad Blake, not Mitchell Froom. so who?

It's Ed. He had blonde hair in '99. See Letterman appearance with Pete Townshend and Tibeten Freedom concert that year.
  • Maybe the band's next album will be "Multinaural" and released in a surround sound format. Actually, "Multinaural" would be a clever name (if I say so myself) for a box set of the entire catalog remixed in surround sound.

I guess it's already been said, but that dummy head is what is used to make those binaural recordings.

Binaural translates to 2 ears. The ONLY way to get the binaural effect is with headphones some other way of isolating your ear individually(does that exist)?.

The most expensive speakers in the world will not give you the same results unless you somehow isolate 1 ear per speaker.

MULTINAURAL would be impossible, b/c humans only have 2 ears.

Binaural isn't the same as stereo, so multi would not be surround sound.

Easiest way to explain it. Imagine if your ear drums were microphones and what each ear picks up is what is being recorded. There is no isolation with the individual instrument like normal stereo recording.
