I did the pre order and got their new album a few weeks back, and I got to say that it is amazing. PJ turned me onto this band and I have all their albums, but this is by far their best work ever. I strongly suggest you guys taking a listen to it. I wish PJ would have them on tour again. Anyway, the new album is called Post Electric Blues. Does anyone else have it??? What did you thinK?

I did the pre-order and have had my copy for a month now. I think it's a good album. I love the key change in "Younger Than America". I think "Readers and Writers" is a Modest Mouse type of tune. Cool song. "City Hall" is one of my favorites on the album along with "Take Me Back To The Islands". The second half of the album is kind of "meh", but overall it is better than almost everything else out there.

I love City Hall and No Wiser. I really think this is an amazing album. Take me back to the islands is so relaxing.
  • These fellas are my friends. I met PJ coz when Idlewild toured with them in America in 2003 I had the guestlist and backstage passes for 10 shows. I pre-ordered their new album too, and I love it. I think it murders their last one (Make Another World). I've seen them 22 times. I went to London and rang the lads in May and got the list for the three shows in London where they played all 6 of their albums over three nights. Fucking amazing fun. I'm glad someone on here digs them. If anyone wants bootlegs of live shows, let me know. The shows I taped over the years ain't the greatest quality, coz I was usually hanging out with the lads and didn't get good taping spots, but still. One gig in Belfast I taped from under the fucking stage! I taped all the three May gigs, but I ain't releasing them until the new album comes out on general release in October, and the band has played a load of gigs with the new tracks. (One of those shows they played the whole new album and the pre-orders weren't even sent out yet, so you can see why I'm delaying those recordings). Some of my pre-2009 recordings are fair game though.

If anyone's a hardcore fan, I attended a gig in Glasgow last year. It was a rarities and b-sides set. That gig is already on Megaupload. If you want it, PM me for a link.

I'm not trying to be obnoxious, I'm just delighted some people on here dig my mates!

What's the best album to start with these guys? I listened to a couple of their songs on youtube, and I think I can really get in to them. To me, the singers voice makes or breaks a band and they seem to have one that I dig.

I would start with The Remote Part. Then go from there. Great band. Roddy Woomble's solo cd is spectacular as well. Love the new cd, and I'm in the liner notes!!!!

I think I would start off with 100 Broken Windows. Beginning to end it is just one hell of a rock album. Some of the albums before that are a little too heavy for me, but there are still some good tracks. After 100BW is The Remote Part which is a great pop rock album. It is their most commercial sounding album. Warnings/Promises is the follow up to that album and is a good mix of rock and folk. Make A New World is a good album as well. It is a little all over the place, but "Ghost In The Arcade" and "Once In Your Life" are on there, and they are easily two of my favorite Idlewild tracks. The new album, Post Electric Blues, is a lot closer to Warnings/Promises...and that's a welcome sound.

The lead singer has two solo folk albums. My Secret Is My Silence is his first one, and just last fall released one called Before The Ruin. Both are amazing listens if you like a) folk music in general or b) the folky Idlewild tracks from the last 4 albums.

I spammed 100 broken windows about a million times when i was 12 or 13? But my brother made me trade it for Facelift. Was nostalgic to actually see them.

I just placed my order for The Remote Part, because no store around here carries anything by them. Next I'm gonna check out 100 Broken Windows, and move on from there.

Thanks for the suggestions, and here's to hopefully a new band for me to get into because lately I've been in one of my famous "there's nothing that I want to hear" phases. I know Backspacer's going to knock me out of it, but that 'aint for a month or two. And in music time - that's a long friggin' time. :D

Aww screw it... I just went ahead and bought 100 Broken Windows and Warnings/Promises. If you're going to jump in, jump in, right?

Now I'll just have to explain it to the wifey - she don't like to let go of a dime.

I was listening to Roddy Woomble's solo cd in the office today, it's one of my favourite things he's done. I'll definitely have to get the new album.

I've only been lucky enough to the see them once, when they supported REM in Cardiff in 2005. They covered Sweet Home Alabama with Mike Mills on piano and their whole set was amazing.

I am glad to see this band getting some love around here. With so many crap bands out there, here is a excellent band that doesn't get the respect they deserve. For the person who just bought some of their past cd's, here is a list of my top ten songs by them. Check these out first:

    1. The Remote Part
    2. Blame it on Obvious Ways
    3. Live in a Hiding Place
    4. Let me Sleep
    5. Welcome Home

I would be interested in hearing some of you other guys faves.

  • THey don't have a song called 'The Remote Part'. They do have a song called 'In Remote Part/Scottish Fiction'.

Here's a quick summary of the musical stylings of Idlewild. If you're new to the band, may this serve as a subjective guide of where you may like to start.

    Captain EP: Noisey garage rock

Hope is Important: Noisey garage rock. Great songs, but a real 'indie' type production. I like the songs better live.

100 Broken Windows: Pixies-like rock music. Classic.

The Remote Part: More of a 'classic rock' feel. Full of real classic stadium rock anthems.

Warnings/Promises: Idlewild stretch themselves. Their most far-reaching and musically diverse album. For the die-hards, most often their least favourite. It's just too different for them. But I think it's fucking great. I think there was an element of the band not wanting to be stuck doing punk rock songs when they're 40 years old. They really spread their wings on this one, and I fucking love it. Gav Fox's first and only album as new bass player.

Make Another World: Back to basics. Criticised for it's lack of melody. But a good tight rock album, hearkening back back to the 100 Broken Windows era. Gareth Russel's first album as new bass player.

Post-Electric Blues: really poppy for an Idlewild album. I'm digging this a lot.

This band have never made the same album twice.

  • Oh, and to those who want the band to tour the US, may be someone knows a promoter who'd like to bring them over? I'd be happy to pass on details.

Yeah, trust me, you won't regret it. They are my second favorite band behind pearl jam. Start with the album The Remote Part. It is probably their best, and the song remote part/scottish fiction is pure genius.

I love Idlewild they are an amazing band. I did the pre-order thing too but I'm sad to say that I think their new album is their worst. It has grown on me and there is probably only one track, maybe two that I think are bad songs but it still disappoints me, especially since prior to this album I thought that each new album was better than the one before it.

I would without any hesitation do the pre-order thing again.

I've been listening to the three albums I ordered non-stop for the past couple of days. I'm getting into them. A lot of the way that the singer phrases his lyrics reminds me of Morrisey with REM standing in as the backing band. Overall very cool though.

The two songs I'm digging the most so far is American English and Love will lead us from Lonlieness, but there are plenty of other songs that I enjoy. I still need like a week or two before I can really tell what stays with me.

I remember being floored when I first heard "American English" at Bonner Springs in 2003. I kept saying, "there's no way this song shouldn't be huge in America...no way". I still believe that today. There is an awesome studio acoustic version of "Love Steals Us From Lonlieness" that was released on something. I used to have it but now I can't find it anywhere. Anyone have that?

I have it. It was a b-side to one of the Warnings/Promises singles. I have all of their b-sides. I won't have time to put them up anywhere until after the Euro PJ tour-I'm going to all 5. If someone wants to PM me for the b-sides after the Euro tour, you're welcome to remind me.

I travelled with Idlewild on the 2003 PJ US tour, as they're my friends and know I love PJ. Backstage passes, met PJ, the works. Really good fun. I'll never forget the rain at Bonner Springs, I've never seen rain like it in my life! My missus worked some magic and somehow kept our PJ poster dry and safe. I'll never forget Release: Ed singing 'oh dear dad', then a crack of lightning in the sky and Ed saying 'Hi dad'-fucking brilliant. And Mc Cready fulling on his stomach during the Even Flow solo (slipped on the wet stage) and didn't miss a note. And Ed slamming the mic stand down on the stage after Go and storming off. Good times. The lads in Idlewild said that PJ were late taking the stage that night coz of the storm-they were debating whether to cancel their set. My friend Gav who used to play bass in Idlewild said: 'they're talking about a Tibet concert'-I explained that a girl got electrocuted during a storm during PJ's set at one of the Tibetan Freedom Concerts talking on her phone (struck by lightning). So there you go-PJ nearly didn't play that night in Bonner Springs. Bit of inside knowledge for you!

  • And for anyone interested, Idlewild played the same set every night when they supported PJ in America/Canada in 2003. Here's the setlist:

    Little Discourage
You Held the World in Your Arms
I Am What I Am Not
    I'm a Message
    Tell Me Ten Words
    These Wooden Ideas
    Modern Way of Letting Go
    American English
When I Argue I See Shapes
    A Film for the Future
    Roseablilty
    In Remote Part/Scottish Fiction
