Hoping for more brooding songs...

I noticed something while listening to the Ed version of The End the other day... Although it's a a rather deep subject matter, musically, the song seems to be a little plinky plonky.

Now, i'm not saying I have a problem with plinky plonky, Parachutes is one of my favourite PJ songs and you couldn't get more plinky plonky  What I'm saying is, Avocado had a distinct lack of brooding songs. I mean songs like Sleight Of Hand, Release and All Or None - Songs that are musically quite dark.

I'm just hoping that the new album has a bit more erm... I think the word I'm looking for is 'bleakness'. I love that about Pearl Jam, they can produce a song like Elderly Woman and then produce something like Parting Ways... I love the diversity and I don't think we got that on Avocado (Army Reserve is about as close as it got IMO).

I'm not moaning, I love Avocado and the new material (so far), I guess I just hope that The End's final edit is as sombre as it's lyrics.

I think this makes sense... :?
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Sleight of Hand and Parting Ways are how I think PJ should sound. Heavy and brooding :)

I doubt there will be many, if at all any, "brooding" songs on this album. But I really hope there are. Binaural is epic! :D

  • the dark/deep songs are my favorites....but i understand the bands need to step away from that frame of mind for a few....Ed is too much of a brooding lyricist to just write pop songs....deep & dark will make a return..maybe even on the new album..ya never know!

Where their music is is where their lives are and I think and hope they are all happy these days.
The teenage angst is gone and maybe some of the disappointment and disillusionment that followed.
    A natural progression
Besides people just get happier and more at peace the older they get in general and it
sounds strange but the closer they get to leaving this world. Maybe we'll get inspirational deep and brooding!
