Why go from FLAC to mp3? Is file size and storage space a concern?
FLAC files sound better when converted to WAV - there is no loss of data or sound quality. WAV files can burn to CD in CD quality audio, and WAV files will work on an Ipod at the highest bit rate setting and sound better for the cost of using more space than a compressed mp3 file.
Whichever converter you go with, there should be an option to decode the flac files to WAV.

A WAV file unfortunately takes up much, much, much more space than an MP3. I'll use the WAV to burn a CD, but use the MP3 for the iPod.
I Know All The Rules But The Rules Do Not Know Me.
Flac frontend only goes to wav. I use Flac Frontend for flac > wav and mkwact for wav > mp3.
The reason to make mp3s is so they can go on your ipod. I don't save the original flac unless I'm planning to keep seeding a torrent or I don't think I'll be able to find the flac again if I need it for trading (or if I was the original taper, then I archive my flacs on cds).
I used to put "do not convert to mp3!" on my tape notes, like a lot of tapers did, but now I trade out mp3s of my tapes along with the flac. I don't see the need to be such a stickler for lossless when most people are listening to music on their ipods, and storing lots of music on their hard drives instead of having big live cd collections. A lot of my audiophile friends who held out and maintained shns of all their cds have given in and switched to 320 kpbs mp3s, because they admit they can't hear the difference.
Nothing against anyone who wants to keep lossless copies, but don't you hold anything against those of us who don't. :-)

I agree with this entirely. A human can not hear the difference between a properly encoded 320kbps mp3 file and a .wav file.
However, I keep the original lossless files intact just in case I do ever want to burn a cd for someone or the technology changes to something better.

Same way I roll, too!
No offense but that's a complete waste of time.
It's not a waste of my time, and my processor doesn't complain. Those are my multi-tasking programs - if I'm converting my own tapes, I'm going from wav > flac and wav > mp3 anyway.
But yes I would recommend something like Trader's Little Helper for a non-taping trader who only wants to go from flac > mp3, no point making wavs.
Foobar2000 is one of the best free audio conversion tools out there. It basically allows you to playback and/or convert to and from almost any format.

Easy and free.

Use 'Switch' to go from FLAC (or SHN) directly to MP3. It's a great program that I've been using for years.
