The Fixer - Initially Dissappointed, now Digging into it

Just my little experience with the song so far.

I first heard the song on youtube... and it was definitely different from other Pearl Jam... in a not so good way. It sounded very poppy and really just like a generic upbeat movie montage song... as much as I LOVE the band (or perhaps because of it) I was dissapointed... more than I have been in the past.

A couple days passed and I tried to look at the release of the single in a positive way, to possibly see the best in the song. If nothing else, I saw the fact that it took some courage to do what PJ did, by releasing an overtly positive and optimistic song in a genre and time where negativity is the safe thing and positivity is a path full of "sell out" land mines and instant loss of credibility... I recognized the balls it took to put out the song from the start... I had just hoped it might not be packaged in such an "innoffensive" way, as one person put it.

But, long story short (too late)... I heard the song on the car radio on the way home over the weekend and with better speakers, the song had a bit more of a bite... and also I started to really embrace the song... it has grown on me a lot... now I am actually enjoying it. A lot. It has gone from a 2 to a 4 to around an 8 for me.

It will be interesting to see the public reaction to the song... I genuinely hope people give it a chance... but my gut tells me most people will write it off before the song has a chance to grow on them... but who knows.

A lot of people who hated it are coming to this conclusion finally.. its a fun song! People tried to look to deep into it. Expectations were high. They took it too seriously.. nothing wrong with a pop sing every now and then..

Damn it! Just because it is uplifting and optimistic doesn't mean it has to be simplistic and shallow. It's ridiculous that people justify it as being good just because of these traits. The mood of a song is no excuse for the lack of musical depth that The Fixer shows.

Agreed, there's a lot of depth to it that comes out with further listens, I can image it'll be a crackin' one live too, especially with every one joining in with the 'yeah yeahs'!

i wasn't crazy about it either at first but i have had a change of heart. I think it's cool they stepped away from the political, moody sound they are famous for. However, I am dissapointed Stone and Mike sound washed out , Brendan should of turned them way up.
