Boom Gaspar
Here is my question:
I am not sure how much imput or involvement he has in Backspacer, but if for the sake of argument, he were to no longer be a part of Pearl Jam, would the live shows be the same without him?

very cool guy. if they decided to use keys on a song...then boom can play 'em...but...they also seemed to do just fine from ten to binaural.
PJammin do you agree? You're not a very cool guy? if we decided we needed some whining...then PJammin can post..but...we seemed to do just fine on the board from ten to backspacer without them.

Recording
For its ninth album, Pearl Jam chose to go back to working with producer Brendan O'Brien. The new album is the group's first album to be produced by O'Brien since the band's 1998 album, Yield.[2] "At this point, I think we're willing to let somebody cut the songs up a little bit," says lead vocalist Eddie Vedder. "In the past, Brendan would say, 'It's a great song, but I think you should do it in a different key', and we'd say no. But now that we've heard Bruce [Springsteen] has listened to his suggestions, I think we will too."[3] Bassist Jeff Ament said, "He brings a brutally honest approach to what he thinks is working and what isn't, and it really moves things along...We don't get waded down with ideas that maybe aren't even that good. He's one of the few people outside of the band that we trust with our music, and we're really, really looking forward to making this record."[4]
In 2007, after Pearl Jam's 2006 tour had ended, the band members began recording demo material on their own while staying in occasional contact via e-mail. Guitarist Mike McCready revealed at the time that he had tested out some ideas with guitarist Stone Gossard and drummer Matt Cameron in separate sessions as well.[5] Rolling Stone reported in May 2008 that Pearl Jam was in the early stages of working on its ninth studio album and had already had one session with O'Brien. McCready stated in 2008 that the album is "really in its infant stages right now" and that the band had "about five ideas that have been worked on."[2] After laying down some instrumental beds in 2008, additional demos were put to tape in December,[4] and Ament, Cameron, Gossard, and McCready came up with another array of material during a trip to Ament's home in Montana.[3] Ament said, "It's the first time since the first record that we've really rehearsed...instead of just going to the studio with a handful of ideas."[3]
Vedder proceeded to put rough vocals on about half of the material formulated in the December session,[4] and also brought in his own material for the band members to work on.[6] In February 2009, Pearl Jam went into the studio for a two-week session in Los Angeles, California with O'Brien.[4] It was the first time the band spent a considerable amount of time recording outside of Seattle, Washington since the band's 1996 album, No Code.[4] McCready said, "[When] we got together with Ed and it really started getting more cohesive, we took that momentum down to Los Angeles with Brendan...It was a great idea to get us out of Seattle. You’ve gotta get out [of] your comfort zone, and we’ve talked about doing that for the past ten years and kind of haven’t, so we trusted Brendan’s judgment."[6] The band then continued to finish the album with O'Brien at his mixing facility at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, Georgia.[7]
[edit] Music and lyrics
When giving an in-depth look at the new album, Vedder stated, "The new record feels good so far—really strong and uptempo, stuff we can sink our teeth into."[3] Gossard said, "There's plenty of ballads, too...And there's some shifts in how Jeff and Matt and I are all relating—I think this record's got a chance to sound significantly different."[3] Ament said, "There's a couple of great things that Ed brought in that could be real departures for us. Whatever wave Ed caught with [his soundtrack for] Into the Wild has taken him to different places."[3] McCready said, "I'd sum it up as kind of a tight, concise, rock ’n’ roll record with kind of pop or maybe new wave elements to it...It’s a really quick record, but I like that element to it. I like the sparseness of the songs and the way that Brendan pulled us together and made us play as good as we could."[6] Vedder also stated, "I've tried, over the years, to be hopeful in the lyrics, and I think that's going to be easier now."[3]
[edit] Release
Pearl Jam did not re-sign its record deal with J Records, and the band will be releasing the album without a label in the United States and through Universal Music Group internationally. Pearl Jam has reached a deal with Target to be the exclusive big-box store retailer for the album in the United States, however the album will also see release through the band's official website, independent record stores, and an as-yet-unconfirmed online retailer.[8] The lead single "The Fixer" will be made available through online music stores.[9] Although as of July 24, 2009 the song is still unavailable through iTunes. Pearl Jam has filmed a commercial for Target directed by Cameron Crowe which features "The Fixer".[8]
[edit] Packaging
The artwork for the album is being handled by editorial cartoonist Dan Perkins, who goes by the pen name Tom Tomorrow.[10] Perkins spent six months working on the artwork.[11] In 2009, Village Voice Media, publishers of 16 alternative weeklies, suspended all syndicated cartoons across their entire chain. Perkins lost twelve client papers in cities including Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City and Seattle,[12] prompting his friend Vedder to post an open letter on the Pearl Jam website in support of the cartoonist.[13] The album title Backspacer is also the name of a leatherback turtle that was sponsored by Pearl Jam for Conservation International and National Geographic’s Great Turtle Race.[14]
Those who pre-order the album through Pearl Jam's official website will receive a version of the album with different packaging than the retail version. Similar to the fan club pre-order version for the band's 2006 album, Pearl Jam, this fan club pre-order version resembles a book and has the liner notes bound inside it.
[edit] Tour
Main article: Backspacer Tour
Pearl Jam will be promoting the album with tours in the United States and Australia in 2009.[1] In October 2009, Pearl Jam will be headlining the Austin City Limits Music Festival.[15] The Austin City Limits appearance will take place amidst the nine-date United States leg of the tour.[1] An additional leg consisting of a tour of Australasia is expected to be announced at a later date.[1] An interview with Vedder from March 2009 suggests that Pearl Jam will have few, if any, tour dates in 2010 due to a member of the band expecting a child next year.[16]

Seems to me that artists can't remain in a vacuum. They need to always "re-invent" themselves for creativity sake. We that love the artist as they were sometimes struggle with the artist they've become. Pearl Jam, to me, walk this tightrope extremely well. They blend the adventurous new with the tried and true old. Keeps them active, relevent, and edgy. Seems Boom has become vital to this end and I for one am grateful for his presence.

boom is cool...no question about that. no one is whining. i see you flunked math because you can't put 2 and 2 together.
i certainly don't wish him away. all i meant was for them to use them like they do. mostly only on songs that they've created with him. i prefer to hear the older songs as they recorded them. hell, they know what they are doing. i'm going to stop now.
yeah, well, you just can't please all people...nor should they try. matt is perfect with pj and as long as they all love playing together that's all that matters in the long run. to me, matt is the perfect fit. as far as boom, you can really tell he enjoys playing on tour. it's great to see that enjoyment.

oh, and before someone has a pop at me, this is suppost to be a discussion???????
Whoa.... wikipedia. The definitive source.
i really don't like the organ sound. when he plays piano, i'm cool with that. i also do NOT like the boots where i hear boom LOUDER than either jeff or mike.
I am still not convinced that Tom Tomorrow is doing more than just the LP artwork. And I have heard no confirmation (unless in one of the recent band interviews it is confirmed) that Boom is on this forthcoming record.
according to the liner notes on the back, Mike played piano on Santa Cruz.
