The government is giving out $3500-$4500 if you trade in your "clunker" for a new car.
1. Check if your car meets requirements
Your "clunker" must
- Get less than combined EPA MPG of 18. Check here if you qualify http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/findacar.htm
- Be owned / registered / insured to you for at least a year
- Be driveable
- Be newer than 1983 model
2. Check how much your car is worth
- Go to KBB.com and check how much your car is worth
- If it's trade-in value is worth over $4500, ignore this government offer and just sell the car. Keep in mind your car may not sell for trade-in value
3. Check how much you can get from the government
- Depending on what kind of car you trade in and buy, you can either get $3500 or $4500. Check here http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/cars.shtml
4. If you qualify, go shop for a new car
- We don't recommend buying a new car, but if you want a new car, this is a great offer. Government has allocated $1b for this offer.

Unfortunately my car isn't considered a "clunker".
It's an older car, but it gets 34mpg, and doesn't really fit the gov't definition for any kind of new car rebate.
Crap!

Sounds like it.
As long as you get a new car with better mpg (I think it's like 4 better than what you have) you should qualify.
