They just played Dissident during the broadcast, they play quite a bit of Pearl Jam.
Yeah but they play same 5 songs every freakin day. Unless you make a request or play "The Last Letter Game" that's only time you'll ever here something different.

Does anyone else in Chicago remember when Q101 used to do 'The Pearl Jam' back in the mid-nineties? I remember trying to capture it on cassette using the boom box I had back in the day just because they would usually play at least one live or rare track. Good times.

Q101 has definitely gotten progressively worse the past few years. I like the DJ Elektra who is on middays. She's a pretty big PJ fan and she knows her shit about music, but she cant control what she has to play. I usually stick with my ipod or sports radio in the car. XRT is pretty solid, but they can play some really weird shit at times.

The irony of "the Pearl Jam" was that I started to really get into PJ after they stopped having "The Pearl Jam." I would love if there was a station that did that again.
Good job on the Sox avatar.

If people wanted to hear The Fixer on the radio, stations would be playing it. That's how radio works. The stations who are playing it are showing respect to Pearl Jam...as they should. But besides the song sucking (in my opinion), the song doesn't fit in with the alternative rock station agenda like WWS did.
They just played Dissident during the broadcast, they play quite a bit of Pearl Jam.
Hmm, just played some Severed Hand in the post-game... too bad we play like guys with severed hands when up in that damn place, thank God we only have 5 games left there.

The Q101 Pearl Jam.. it was like every night a 9 pm wasn't it? Like half an hour of rare cuts.. it was awesome!.. That was back right before they released No Code and slipped into culthood.

I don't think it was a half an hour. If my memory serves me right it was 5 songs (maybe 4?) in a row. I remember that their competition at the time, Rock103.5 tried doing a Metallica block of songs shortly after that. You nailed the era, because I know it was around the time of vitalogy/merkinball/soldier field and it ended around no code. They would play some great live/rare stuff that was only found on overpriced boots at the time.

Rock 103.5 was the shit, much better than Q101. After Mancow left 103.5, that station went down the crapper. Too bad, Chicago could use a quality rock station.

Very true... I agree with the earlier posts that XRT is the best station we've got in chi-town. You will have more pleasant surprises listening to that station than any other in town. My only problem with it is that they play a lot of random stuff from well before I was born that I just don't care for. I tend to prefer heavier stuff when it comes to the classics like the who, led zeppelin, sabbath, hendrix... And you need to go to a station like The Loop to hear that.
I do prefer how Q101 plays a higher percentage of 90s alternative than they did a few years back. Why doesn't Chicago have a station for people who grew up on 90s rock but don't listen to much of today's mainstream rock. I can't stand most of the current bands they play; blue october, theory of a deadman, hollywood undead... the list goes on. Probably hate most of it because it is on so often.
Someone mentioned MGMT/KoL earlier. It's good to hear that there are other people in town who grew up on 90s alternative and still listen to good new music today. If only we had a station that played bands like TV on the Radio, White Rabbits, YYY's, Spoon, Grizzly Bear, cold war kids, etc and mixed it in with the best of the nineties.

I think everybody stuck in the 90's really needs to check out the up and coming bands.
Don't forget to add Metric, Vampire Weekend, Hockey, The Thermals, and the Decemberists to this list.
But once again the best way to get exposed to these bands is through the satelite radio, definitely not played enough on the FM band.

I agree that radio sucks a$$ in Chicago. Plain garbage. And if I'm just missing the good radio, its because I can't stand to go up and down the dial looking for something because all I hear is crap when I do. I listened to Q101 some back in the 90's. Started out listening to The Blaze and Rock 103.5. 97.9 The Loop has been a turd since those stations went away. Except for Johhny B. If you've never listened to Jonathon Brandmeier in the morning, you're missing out. I usually only listen to Q101 if a new PJ song is out or if I'm in my wifes car. Is it just being older and "not getting" todays music or does it just really suck that bad? Thankfully I'm a Chicago sports fan and if you like sports radio, Chicago has some really entertaining AM sports stations IMO.

We do have solid sports radio. I like the afternoon saloon & waddle/silvy on ESPN1000. But I can't stand Boers/Bernstein on the Score. Those two always compliment each other's opinion and cut of their callers when they make an opposing point. I miss Dan Hampton. He was great in the that late morning time slot. He kept saying that Luol Deng was out with "a bruised va-jay-jay" at the end of last years bulls season. Classic.

Q101 was awesome back in the 90s. Not so much now. They play like the same 25 songs over and over and over again. The only times I even listen to Q101 anymore is when Electra's on, doing The Last Letter Game, or when they have one of their end of the year countdowns of the past 15 years. Otherwise, there's no point in listening to it since it's all the same stuff on repeat.

The aforementioned 102.1 from Milwaukee also had the Pearl Jam Session (or something like that) back in the 90s. That makes me want to go look through my cassettes to see if I still have some rarities taped off of that show. I think it was usually a 3-song set.
