what is the significance of this phrase...I thought I knew but I was told i was wrong? any help

    ^^ that's a nice theory about about the rape thing. but see, this is why Eddie's lyrics are so great. they're open. because I read the phrase as: Pearl Jam vs. the music industry. hence the title of the record.. perhaps. for example:

    It's the five of them (5 members) against one (the industry). like it's Eddie speaking directly to the the industry types ("you") and it's torturing him ("me"). abducted from the street possibly referring to how PJ achieved overnight superstardom. why would they want to hurt him with all these demands now that they are stars? and so then mimicing what he says in the song "Rats", that he'd rather be with an animal than with the seedy/needy/greedy industry types. some animals (take rats) are better beings than humans!

    anyway that's my take. in one of the pages in the Vs. lyric book there's a page that's not lyrics per se but more Ed's scribblings done during a label metting, and it appears as if that sort of thing is torture to him!

    but again I believe these lyrics are designed to be open to interpretation. that's why they are so great.

    This is how I always perceived it too. At the time of Vs release Ed was under such extreme pressures and I always took the Animal lyrics to be a barely disguised reflection of that (if I'm remembering correctly, Five Against One was also the working title for Vs and the press referred to it by that name almost upto it's release)

    Yep, I also always thought it was a reference to the band, which I really liked (group hug!). But I never thought it really fit in with the rest of the lyrics. Either way, one of my faves.

    I always though that it was about a gang rape, but I also heard that it was about how Eddie Vedder sometimes felt that he was being ganged up on by the rest of the band and their manager about making the record.

    I like the idea of the band vs. the industry.

    I remember reading in The Pearl Jam Story by Kim Neely that Ed at one time mentioned that he felt there was 5 (the band, & maybe Kelly Curtis) against 1 (Ed) during the Vs. sessions.

    I can't remember the exact text of the book, but I always found that to be an interesting take on it.
