Tigers vs. White Sox

This is such an important series!
Both teams pretty much tied for the AL Central, Chicago is playing great and coming off an amazing performance yesterday from Mark Burhle (not to mention one of the greatest catches of all time by DeWayne Wise), while the Tigers have been unable to get any offense since the break.

I think if the Tigers can win this series, they might have a shot, but if Chicago takes it, even with as much season as there is left to play, I think Detroit is done.

Tigers up 2-1 in the fifth.

This was a big win today. Verlander going the distance is huge for the team, given the 4 games in 3 days issue. I also liked that they got a lot of real small done today... it seems that lately they've all been trying way too hard to play long ball and striking/popping out too much. Guillen in the lineup will hopefully make a huge difference for the team. And Granderson and Polanco are slowly getting back to their usual form... Polanco's been on fire lately. I wonder if Inge will sit the second game given his knee problems... two in one day seems like a gamble and he's been struggling enough lately as it is.

Statistically, aren't double headers almost always split? It'd be nice to get another win tonight. They need a streak going...

Yeah, but it would be so nice to get two wins today to guarantee at least a split in the series.

And it happened. I gotta be honest, I didn't think they had it in them. I don't know how Clete laid off that ball four, but I love him for doing it. Still, a bit disappointed that they couldn't drive a few of those runs in. But what can you do? Good to see Guillen back, and a clutch double by Magglio is a good sign too!

I don't want to get too excited, but it seems Chicago ALWAYS has Detroit's number, but this year Detroit has been able to fight back.

Like I said I don't want to get too excited, but it's tough not to.

    Three in a row!
Let's see if we can get the sweep!
Although the last time the Tigers played the Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball, it was pretty embarassing...

Don't remember that game. I thought overall they did well against the Cubs? Or did they just blow the one on national tv?

Yesterday's game was stellar. Putting together several hits to tie the game and drive in the winner... that's the kind of baseball that they've been lacking lately. Guillen adds so much to this lineup it's not even funny. I hope they bat Magglio in the 3rd spot tonight. I know he's been struggling, but he's also gotten a lot of good contact lately and come up with a few clutch hits for the first time in too long to remember. And now that Guillen can back up Cabrera, there's no way anyone will try to pitch around Magglio which ensures he'll get some good pitches to hit. If they can wake up his bat, combined with Guillen coming back to the lineup, this team could really take off in the second half, esp considering the number of home games they have.

Once Guillen is fully healthy, things are going to get interesting... Thames, Thomas, Maggs, Guillen, and Raburn are all outfielders... who plays, who sits, and who DH's? I think Raburn will be sent back down and Thames will DH, but if Magglio starts hitting again, do you still platoon him with Thomas? Or move Thomas to left so as not to push Guillen too hard. I like Thames hitting regularly, so I hate to see him benched...

Wow- huge brain fart on my part.
It was the White Sox on Sunday night baseball, not the Cubs
The game was last year, and the only reason I remember it was because it was one of the few nationally televised games the Tigers were in last season, and I happened to be out in California on business and was pretty pumped that I got to watch the game. It was just about this time of year, when the Tigers still technically had a chance at contending for the AL central, and then pretty much got embarrassed by the Sox. It was like 10-1 or something.

I think Thomas and Raburn will both probably see time in Toledo before the season is over, Leyland loves to shift guys around based on how they are playing. Thames will stay in the lineup as long as he keeps hitting, and if he happens to cool off, then we've got some other options. A lot hinges on Maggs' ability to hit. He has to produce. He's already on a short leash considering the incentives he receives if he gets a certain amount of at bats. But if he heats up, they are going to have to bite the bullet and keep letting him play. Some guys are going to be hot, others are going to be cold, it's nice to have so many players to plug in. It will be interesting to see how Leyland handles the lineups. Lets hope the "Wizard of Woodward" can do his magic again!

How did I know that when I saw you posted on this thread, some Twin love wouldn't be far behind

I like our division though. Even when it's mediocre, there are always seems to be at least three teams that still have a chance to win.
Perhaps I'm biased, or because I have no real basis for comparison, but I think it's cool that the division always seems to have parity with more than two teams. Kansas City has struggled for years, while the Sox and the Twins are always competing, and then either the Tigers or the Indians always seem to not be far behind. Cleveland's had a tough go of it this year, but the Tribe will be back again.

Starting to feel like last year's game- 4-0 Sox in the FIRST with just one out... could get ugly

No kidding, talk about an ugly start. It figures they've had everything firing on all cylinders all weekend only to show up on national tv and get railed. Of course, Porcello partly brought it on himself... I know he's young but you don't know to cover first base for that DP?

I might be way off, but I think Porcello might be done for the year. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets sent to the bullpen. He's lost a lot of that velocity that made him hard to hit in the first half, and has now pitched more innings than he ever has before in his career. I think he's going to be a great player, but he's only 21 and his arm needs to get used to the grueling life of a big league pitcher.
Or maybe he's just having a rough last couple of starts. We'll see though.

I still can't believe how young this Porcello guy is. Shutting him down soon might be a good idea. The Sox did that in 2007 with Danks when he hit around the 150 inning mark. He was only 22 at the time and that has worked out pretty good so far.

I think this is one of those situations where you have to put yourself in a bad position this year (by losing a starter) to save for the future. This kid looks too good to wear him out. And you have to figure too, most pitchers don't make it to the big leagues until they are 23-25, so you have to be careful with younger guys like Danks and Porcello. But, like I said, we'll see what happens.

Yeah its a pretty touchy situation with guys that young. The Sox were way out of it in 2007 so it wasnt a huge deal when they shut Danks down. With the Tigers looking to be in this til the end, itd be tough to yank a starter from the rotation. But if he starts struggling, you know Leyland will pull him out of there.

50 pitches in 2 innings... I think Porcello goes out after this inning, esp if any of these big guys hits a home run, which seems likely.
