Verrrrrrrrry close. Could go down today. My guess is that the deal is done, just waiting for Selig to okay it since I would expect money to be exchanging hands.

It's not a huge deal. Whoever signs Holliday in the offseason, the Cards will get two 1st round picks out of the signing. Either as a rental or long term, it's a good move. And only reaffirms that the Phils HAVE to go get Doc.
3 prospects to the A's including 3B Brett Wallace.
The A's will pick up $1.5M of Holliday's remaining salary.

I was wondering why the A's even traded fo him to begin with ?
No shot they were going to resign him

He's a type A free agent I believe. Teams that lose a type A free agent receive the top draft pick of the team that signs their free agent and a supplemental draft pick in the upcoming draft as compensation.
Because this is the same GM that invented Moneyball. They take a shot by trading for him this year, and if it works out and make the playoffs then they let him walk and pick up the draft picks. Or, as it has occured, and it didn't work out then they trade him and pick up prospects.
Well, that's only true if the team that signs him is in the top half of the league. You can't lose a top 15 pick by signing a free agent. If a "bad" team signs him, the Cardinals would get a supplemental pick at the end of the 1st and a 2nd.
But that point is moot because both Boston and the Yanks are looking for a LF next year so one of those two will sign him.

Exactly. And I don't know how this season may have hurt him - as well as the economy - in getting a 18-20 mil/yr contract.
damn. things just got a little harder for the astros. speaking of the astros, they should pick up another arm.

Pujols isn't goin anywhere.....
The Cards need a big bat way more than they need Doc. As long as Carpenter stays healthy he is among the best pitchers in baseball.
Prospects get you fired and besides the Cardinals just signed a Dom Rep 16 yr old that's supposed to be in the bigs in a couple years.
